The Others,

BTW, I just put the above back through babelfish for a look at how it may appear. I couldn't read the gibberish it produced. My apologies to Corvette Lee, I hope you can understand it OK.

Yes, that card on the left is a silver. I worked it out when I read the word "silver" on it. As for how to upgrade it... You see this thread you've replied to? Go read it start to finish.

You can check in Client Manager -> Help -> Version Info -> Primary Funtions firmware Variant x, Version x.xx

Primary firmware 4.00 can't write PDA
Primary firmware 4.02 OK
Primary firmware 4.04 OK

Hardware Version 5.0 can't read PDA

After reading through this thread - I'm still confused about some things. So only some specific versions of silver cards can be changed to support 128bit wep? Is there any way to know if one will support the change or not before buying it? I'd like to get a card off of ebay - but I want to make sure I get one that can handle the switch! Thanks!

I also get an Intersel flashold error 322 with primary firmware 4.00

Here's the message I emailed Andrew Hakman who detailed this procedure.. I am able to read the PDA file using the -legacy parameter just fine however I am unable to WRITE it back to the card... NOTE I have the MIDDLE card pictured above which is the LUCENT Orinoco Silver.... AND UNFORTUNATELY I have the Primary Firmware version 4.00 which several users have said here is "locked" from the Intersel flash program WRITING the new modified PDA file...

It seems that everyone who got the flash to write properly without an Error 322 is they had primary firmware version 3.02, 4.02 or 4.04..... Now if someone can figure out how to get firmware 4.00 to upgrade... this seems to be a pretty common version out there!!!

-----

Hi there,

I found your website after spending hours on the net
trying to figure out how to upgrade my silver card to
gold (Original Lucent one) to get WEP 128. The one
hack where you got some hacked 7.42 drivers and then
upgraded to firmware 8.10 does NOT work it still stays
as a Silver card even though it was upgraded to 8.10

SO I decided to give your hack a try on a IBM Thinkpad
600X series.

I had to use the -legacy parameter on flash.exe
intersel program in order for the PDA file to be read.

I've attached my "modified" orinoco.pda file with this
email.

However when I try to use flashold.exe (and tried the
flash.exe as well) I get an error message (Not the
verify message) but a Command 322 never signaled
status (the new flash program says that the busy bit
never gets cleared) as follows:

Slot 0: PCIC: 82365SL compatible - B step (5V only)
Slot 1: PCIC: 82365SL compatible - B step (5V only)

Card 0 found: card was off
Loaded PDA file "orinoco.pda" successfully. Previous
PDA will be replaced.
Writing PDA... Download buffer: page 60; offset 0;
size 2000; timeout 5000ms

Error - Command 322 never signaled status!
Download error
FAILED.

ERROR ENCOUNTERED.

---
Any ideas? I'd appreciate it I'd like to get this to
work!

Turns out my primary firmware version is 4.00 (of course it had to be that.. would have been too easy otherwise )
Can one upgrade the Primary firmware to 4.02/4.04?

Edit: A friend's card has 4.04.. Does this help me?
Edit2: On the picture, I have the card on the far left.

Of the three cards pictured earlier, I have the right-most one (the purple card) and was able to upgrade it to Gold. I have the Primary Firmware of 4.04, here is a screen shot of the Versions. Note that I am using the latest drivers from Agere as I was trying, unsuccessfully, to get WPA-PSK to work.

Version of software....

One thing I thought I would post to help other users... I learned the following the HARD way...

When I went to the proxim website to download the LATEST drivers when I was trying the windows hack (which fails) when I went to the download section the drivers that came up with the menu searches was for the
8420-WD VERSION....

PLEASE NOTE: THE 8420-WD drivers found on the Proxim site will NOT work properly with your original Lucent Orinoco card's... They SEEMED to work but caused all kinds of problems for me!! NOTE that the 8420-WD drivers will give you the Client Manager version 3.30 which is what dda's screensnap shot shows... But I had all kinds of trouble with Client Manager 3.30.... I had to find the older version 2.90 released for the 8410-WD to work with my Lucent Orinoco Silver.....

Now here's the weird part....

The ONLY way I could find the correct 8410-WD drivers was NOT in their support/download section, I had to go to their PRODUCTS section and find the "Orinoco CLASSIC Gold" card and then I clicked on the DRIVERS link on the products page.... This launched a DIFFERENT page on their support section which had the correct 8410-WD drivers.. Which are NOT found via a keyword search on their support site.... It is almost as if Proxim is purposely making it hard to find the 8410-WD drivers for some reason..... NOTE that the latest 8410-WD drivers will only give you the Client Manager version 2.90.

To DDA: Were you able to get your 8410-WD to actually work well with the version 3.30 client manager? I couldnt, it wouldn't find/detect my card.... I had to use the older version 2.90.

My card works fine with the 3.30 Client Manager, although I don't use the card for anything other than wardriving so I don't use the CM very much. However, I did test it with 128bit WEP on my AP and it worked fine.

I got the entire driver package (including the CM) from Agere as theirs was later than what was available on the Proxim site and claimed to support WPA-PSK. Since I run w2k and it doesn't have a built-in supplicant, I could never get it to work.

here's the correct link for Proxim's classic cards (drivers, FW, docs, and other utils):

http://support.proxim.com/cgi-bin/pr...cGFnZT0x&p_li=

8.72 Firmware: http://keygen.proxim.com/support/ori...1/firmware.zip

Here's the link to the latest client manager:

http://www.proxim.com/support/all/or...win-sr-02.html

Is there some sort of pattern for 4.00, 4.02, 4.04? I'm using all Lucent cards (the original label) and ALL are 4.00. Is it possible that Avaya, Agere, Dell, Compaq, etc. are 4.02 or 4.04 or would that be too simple.

We all know the FW can be written to the card. Why not just write a util to rip the FW, change the values there, and write the FW like the Apple Airport does. Your PDA will remain unchanged but as long as you have 14 channels and qw8 bit WEP, who cares?

-Mc

Interesting note on the Agere drivers... I'll check it out. What FW is Agere's latest?

hey... where's the AGERE firmware at?

I upgraded my drivers using the Agere client manager and card drivers.

it reports my 7.82 FW card as 9.42 variant 2.

wierd...

My firmware updater from Proxim (die! die! die! die!) no longer runs (as I'm no longer using the drivers for it).

So... where's the latest Agere FW for these cards? I can't find it on their website.

Yes, but you're assuming that the f/w is different between gold and silver cards. Since the silvers can act like golds w/ just a simple PDA change, and since the WSU tool can update both gold & silver, I'm assuming that the f/w will be identical between them, and that a PDA hack is the only way to do it.

Can someone pls dump the PDA of a silver card that's been unlocked via the Airport method? I used to have one but I accidentally upgraded it w/ the WSU too, and thus, it's back to silver functionality, so I can't check if the Airport changed the PDA.
