Thanks. Yes the silver is already 128bit WEP but I was trying to enable the 14 channel scan on them.... would your Alchemy work on the newer Proxims with the flat design I believe they are the 8420-WD and 8421-WD series (instead of the original 8410-WD series)

Talking Oh my god, it's magic !!!

@Lincomatic:

You da man!!!!! Now running in 128bit wep encryption mode thanks to you...

Have been trying to use the old tools in this thread a few months ago, but no luck, and thought yesterday: " let's try this thread again to see if Lincomatic and the others came up with something new." Amazing work, thanks again.

Some info about the steps I followed is below. It may be of some help to you.

My cards are Lucent Technologies Orinoco Silver, now turned into Gold.

I did the following:

- Insert the card in WinXP SP1, using the WinXP driver
- Run Alchemy without the extra options, just update PDA
- Run the Agere FW updater (wsuags454c-872.zip)
Done !

Keep up the good work.

This is fun

I been doing a bit of reading the past couple weeks about netstumbler and it sounded like a fun hobby. Last weekend I picked up a Orinocco "Silver" card for $8 at the local hamfest. Its now a "Gold" thanks to this forum. I used Alchemy to update it then flashed it to the lastest firmware. But I do have a question. It may of been answered already but I might of missed it in the forums.

I need to order a pigtail. What type is the external jack on the "Silver" card called? It this the same jack on the "Gold" ? I may be ordering a dual-band card later so don't want to order a 2nd time. Any suggestions on a place to get the pigtail for a good price?

Also any suggestions on a good antenna to use while mobile? I may just build one for the learning experience but am looking at whats out there.

I'm looking forward to getting out with Netstumbler and some mapping software to see what I can log. This forum has been helpful in getting me started.

It's the same connector on the Silver and the Gold. Other card brands will have different connectors.

FAB-Corp. www.fab-corp.com will meet all your needs for pigtails and antennae. Get the $60 5dBi antenna (NOT the $18 5.5dBi.)

Dumb question:
As it's possible to change the TXpower and other things via PDA, the sensivity cannot be increased, can it?

Lincomatic: Will you put a convert-oem-to-lucent-function into alchemy?

gwang: yes, it will work on the flat ones.

i don't have any information about how to do this in the ORiNOCO PDA.

probably not, because 1) i almost killed my card when i was experimenting w/ how to do it w/ alchemy 2) the CIS contains some info about electrical characteristics, which may be incompatible between different hardware variants, and i don't want to be responsible if someone messes their card up.

has been lurking around for quite some time...

i manage to change my lucent silver to gold on Windows 2000.

When i first plug in the card, it's detected as Wavelan, of coz with this driver i can't flash the card. I change the drivers to the 7.64 version which came out as Orinoco PC card 5v.

I ran alchemy on it. It works. Thanks to Linc. After flashing it, it's now with 128bit WEP RC4. As I'm using a wrt54g router with wpa.. realise that with the client mgr, there is not WPA. So i went agere site to d/l the latest drivers and client mgr. SR02-2.3 ver 3.30 for client mgr and 7.82 for the drivers.

Still no WPA. I read some threads up WinXP supports WPA.... so i format my laptop.. install WinXP on it.

Viola. I'm on WPA-PSK on my Orinoco Gold...

Anyway on Win2K, the linksys 54g card is using it's own client mgr to support WPA.

I read this whole thread 2 times to make i know what am i doing on the card. thanks a lot.

Nice work, I got mine to support WPA-PSK, but never had a compatible access point to test it on. Therefore, when people kept saying it didn't work, I knew it did, but, couldn't prove it.

haha.. after reading the thread once before i even got my lucent silver card.. after having the card.. i sort of forgot the procedure so i read it again.. including find the answer to using WPA for the gold card.

i think maybe a mini-faq.. but i think it's pretty straight forward..

make sure drivers are correct. alchemy it. you able to flash it.

i sort of miss a step. i read some recommendation was:
install driver > flash > alchemy > flash.

but i skipped the first flash step.. guess it doesn't really matters..

Be careful, the dual band ORINOCO don't have an external jack and if you mod it to bring out the connector(s) remember you are dealing with two frequencies and need two different external antennae.

If it is a b/g the the frequencies are the same. If it is an a/b or a/g then it's true that the frequencies are different, but it is illegal to have an external antenna.

Thanks for the reminder. I read that but forgot about it. I just ordered the Netgear WGT624 108 Mbps and card for my home system. I'll use the Orinoco just for Netstumbler. I still want to pick up another Orinoco card for backup and probably look at other cards with external antennas to play with.

Killed my Compaq WL110?!

Hi,
I´m now reading this topic a few days and have to say "woah", what a great forum! You not often see so many friendly people who just want to help each other with such a nice conversational language.
Ok, but here is my problem.
I´ve tried to flash my Compaq WL110 Card (which is already a OEM Gold) to 14 channels. First I tried the hack by andrewhakman and changed the lines "2 104 1fff" to "2 104 3fff" and "6 109 1303 3 2b 0 0" to "6 109 3 3 2b 0 0".
Then I ran the Agere Firmware Updater with no errors.
Since this, my card seems to act as before, the LEDs start blinking and so on, but I can´t connect to my Accesspoint anymore. Also Netstumbler doesn´t find any W-Lans but I´ve tested it with another Card (IBM High Rate) and there ARE W-Lans.
What did I wrong? I also tried some other PDA´s (IBM, WaveLAN) but without any success.
I´ve seen that lincomatic has killed his card but gave it new life by rewriting the CIS. Is this a solution for me, maybe? Ok, if so, I don´t know how to do it, so any hints would be helpful.

Greetings from Germany
