Make me a recommendation?
A friend recently bought an apartment and is looking to get hooked up to the local wifi. He's looking for a Yagi or equivilent (Must be high gain) to connect. The set up will entail placing the attenna outside pointing at the hotspot and then running a Cat5e to a router in the appartment.
Anyone know of a good, reasonalbly cheap, high gain attenna with a AP built in with Ethernet out? (Long list, I know )Regards! |

The nice think about the rootennas is there's space in the enclosure for the radio. You can pull your wrt or whatever out of it's case an install it in the antenna.

Which is exactly why I thought about it. So all you need to run to it is CAT5 with POE units. You don't need to worry about lengths of Coax and the loss associated with it.

Even if the hop isn't that long, running it this way , although more expensive, is logically better because of the elimination of the coax loss. This alone will eliminate many a headache when there are drop outs.

Home made poe is dead stupid easy as well. So far I've been able to get away with using the wall warts the units come with. I've not had to poe anything with a long enough run the resistance of the cat5 cable has really come into play.
