The Martian...

anyone worked with one of these:

http://martian.com/

i emailed one of the product support guys and he mentioned that it runs stock Debian, which would allow me to start up an ftp server or whatever else i wanted.

a bit pricey, but at least it has built-in 802.11b

Look at this thread, same ideas

http://forums.netstumbler.com/showth...&highlight=mp3

From the description it sounds like and Epia 5000 mother board, microITX case, slimline CD, wiress PCI card, and a 40 gb drive. The retail cost of the components alone is around $300 - $350 so their price is within reason. You could build one easily, the value would be in the software.

The Martian is sexy, but really, what it does is pretty prosaic. If cost is an issue (and if you already know OS/server admin) you can probably scavenge a suitably powerful but "retired" PC from your friends or relatives for $0.00, drop in a Wi-Fi card of some kind, install Linux, and you've got it. The work really lies in configuring the OS and network stuff. You don't need a 2 GHz box to serve up files, especially if the conduit is 802.11b.

I had machines stacked up like cordwood for years before we left Arizona. Lots of other people have a few lying around.

Finally, as a side benefit, you can learn a lot by building your own.

Just a thought.

i should add that a product like The Martian would fit the niche market of wireless surveillance DVR.

it seems to have the following benefits:

1) small form factor
2) low power draw
3) built-in 802.11b chip
4) liquid-cooled drive
5) no fans

i see something like The Martian running in an attic somewhere, logging data from wireless sensors or LAN Cameras, being able to run even if the power is cut to the building (a lead-acid battery would probably power The Martian for a good hour or so, depending on how big the battery was)

this has potential as an "affordable" self-monitored home security system...

i know - call me a paranoiac, but in my neck of the woods we were recently hit by a professional burglary ring that cut the power and phone lines to the houses they targetted - even disabling the siren inside the house!

heck, maybe even a WAP-11 or equivalent tied to a ITX motherboard would work?

However, it gave me an interesting and slightly loopy idea: Build a little disk-heavy server with a Wi-Fi client in it and create a compartment for it inside one of the walls of the new house we're building here in the Springs, or maybe put it up in the attic somewhere. The idea is to create a backup server somewhere nobody can see it, so if some loon breaks into the house and cleans us out, my data will still be happily hiding between the walls somewhere, talking to my wired network through a wireless link.
HAHA! that is GENIUS!

And none of the alarm systems had battery backups or radios? Some security!

This has / is already being talked about.....
The idead is to setup HSN's (Hidden Storage Nodes) around
the city and use them for Secure, Anonymous backup, MP3
trading, etc. As the **AA, can't do S*hit about them...

It would in a sence create a new MP3 swapping network. Imagine
a city like Newyork,Miami,San Francisco, with 100' or 1000's of
these nodes around... Do a search for "MP3 Trading Post"
to follow the thread...

I'm in the process of writing a white paper about this. I'll announce it once it's done and I've posted it.

As best I can tell, Madhadder coined the phrase "hidden storage node" here on the forums, in Sovereign's thread on MP3 trading posts. True? Remarkably, the phrase comes up empty on Google.

I'm primarily interested in terms of a nonobvious backup location for mirroring my data files while I work, but the implications for the future of file trading are boggling.
