Microsoft Wireless AP Antenna
Hey All,
I just bought myself a Linksys WAP11 router and am extremely happy with it, especially antenna range. However, I purchased for my mom a VAIO laptop for Christmas, and was having loads of trouble trying to sharea printer on my machine. After research oin the web and many a call to Linksys support, changing workgroup names, the computers still would not see eachother, and thus, could not share a printer. Also, the setup CD would refuse to recognize the router even though I was connected to the net, and can not change any settings, even remotely through its address. And so, I am beginning to think the router isn't worth the trouble since right now I want to take a hammer to it. Therefore, I thought about the MS router due to its supposed ease of setup and use, along with new software to help the entire networking process and strength meter. However, I don't want to return my Linksys before I know anything about the new router. I've been thinking that the antenna isn't that powerful as opposed to the Linksys WAP11, as I am trying to broadcast my symbol down stairs into the sofa and tv area and my mom's desk. I found a picture from the fcc site here Microsoft Antenna Connection Picture and was wondering if anyone who may have the router has tried to modify it. As I am unconfortable about soldering and such techniques, I would much prefer a solution, like a connector cable to an omni, that would help. Otherwise, I may be better of buying a deskjet for $99.00, but the current setup may be easier as I can't change WEP options or disable SSID broadcasts without not being able to recieve internet and having to restart and reset my router numerous times. Thank you for your time, Happy New Year, Ryan Yes, I already searched |

It is unlikely that your file and printer sharing problems are related to wireless. More likely it is a network protocol configuration issue. Did you have it working on a wired segment or is wireless your first foray into networking? If it is, search on "Networking 101" for some resources.
The Linksys WAP11 Access Point is not a router, so you cannot do routing on it. The Linksys BEFW11SR4 is a combination AP/router, which does perform routing. Finally, the antenna on the Microsoft Wireless Router is soldered directly to the PCB. There is no connector. If you're uncomfortable with soldering, modifying this would probably be beyond what you'd want to tackle. Also, modifying it would immediately void your warranty, as well as violate the FCC regs concerning the system certification.
