Mini-PCI cards...

My Girlfriend just dropped her notebook right on the network card... Of course it needs to be replaced now...

My Toshiba 4600 has built in antennaes for wireless but instead of the wireless card it got the 56k card...
I was thinking of getting an Orininoc mini-pci card for it...
Anybody have experience installing one?!?

Doing some searches I've seen it mentioned that cards between different maufactutreres might not work... I'd rahter be safe that sorry...

The card I was going to pass on to her is and Orininoco Silver...

I thought the 4600 had built in LAN/WiFI/Modem standard, I could be wrong . . . are you sure there is nothing in the mini-pci slot?
I am almost positive that the orinoco mini-pci's work, and I am 100% positive that the dell mini-pci's work and can be picked up for very cheap on ebay.

I'm gonna take all the panels off the bottom and look again... There's one that has some unusual screws though... The antennae wires end where the 56K modem is so I'm assuming that's where it should go...

There's nothing wireless in device manager and I have made sure the switch is on... Like you said it's a 900mhz model so Wi-Fi sould've been standard...

-edit- I just got the panel with the "tamper-proof" screws off... There's no wireless card in it... Time to shop...

Thanks...

Is there any card in the mini-pci slot or no? If there is a 56K modem, make sure its not a combo card and the wireless part just isn't installed. If its just a 56k modem, then consider replacing it with a combo card. Finally, if its empty, the modem must be installed elsewhere and put any wireless card you want there. Let me know what you found . . .

The 56K is seperate from the mini-pci... The mini-pci slot is empty and next to the 56K connection... Somehow the antennae wires got into the modem area... That's what confused me...

Ohhh gotcha . . . i actually found some wireless mini-pci cards on ebay with dual antenna connections, can you tell what type of connection they are? I'm gonna guess two U.FL (MHF) antenna leads ???

By the way, that sounds like a kool wardriving laptop, with a little switch to turn on and off wifi.

i have a toshiba satellite w/ minipci orinico. i tried swapping w/ my friend's compaq w/ broadcom minipci .g card. both worked. the only incompatibility was the wifi on/off switches were rendered unusable in both machines when the cards were swapped.

Same thing happened to my friend's laptop when he switched his 802.11b mini-pci card out for an 802.11a/g card. It's too bad they don't make that antenna on/off switch standard on all the laptops/cards.

For some reason I did'nt getg e-amil notifaction on this post until tonight...

Anyway I installed the "Agere" Mini-PCI card a couple weeks ago... No matter what drivers I install it shows as "Toshiba"... On my way to and from work work I found 4 "new" APs will wardriving...

The switch works but only for the antannae... That screwed me up on install :)...

The connectors are the "MHF"...

Also the antennae,,, both,,, are located at the top edge of the screen...

Well it IS election year over on your side of the pond, so most probably it's becuase the card then can pick up both the Republican (right wing) and Democratic (left wing) radio waves..

And if you believe the above, I've got an Eiffel tower I'd like to sell ya..

But if you really most know why, then do a search on "Antenna Diversity", which is the reason why there are 2 antennas normally...

Just my 0.02€'s worth...
