That looks EXACTLY like the ZyXEL adapter I bought the other day. The only difference is that mine did not have a connector installed on it, but a blank spot for it on the board...exactly where that MMCX connector is right now on yours.

The trace on the PCB going from where the center conductor of the connector would be (on mine) did not connect to the rest of the circuit, however. There was a short trace going from the center which just had a gap after a few millimeters and then a resistor or a cap right after that gap going back to the rest of the antenna system. Besides the diversity and all that, it looked as if the resistor would have had to have been moved to get it to work. I don't have a decent SMD iron anymore so I didn't try to mod it.

Don't know if this helps, but this is what I found with my device and I'm almost positive they are the same. That board looks exactly like the one I saw the other day.

If possible can you get a good macro shot of these areas?

Looks like C109 needs to be flipped to become C209 and you'll need some decoupling capacitors also for C113 and C114

Secondly, I wouldn't expect to see any increase in the signal (or very little) when the antenna is "right against a wireless router". I might possibley expect to see a damaged router however. Move the router some distance away, (like several rooms at a minimum) and try again.

Are you using proper tools to analyse the RSSI?

Finally, from you desciption of the board layout, I'm wondering if there is a integral antenna to the case? It sounds and looks like the "ANT2" circle is possibly a contact pad.

I was using Netstumbler. Is there anything better?

there is no other antenna although it does look like a contact pad.

If I cant get it to work via the firmware, how else can I get it to work?

There is another antenna! Look for Ant. 1

And I concur with beakmyn on enabling the connector.

Looks like antenna 1 is the slotted part of the pca. You'll also find a couple of decoupling caps C11x (can't make them out) you could use for the antenna jack. Somewhere around here on another thread you can find info on the DS I posted. I think for testing purposes you can bias the switch using a resitor to lock it into one state, or in your case (ant 2).

beakmyn's got it. Follow his information regarding getting the jack enabled.

Huh, how did you get NS to work in a router?

As far as enabling/disabling the diversity switch: What you want to do is disable it, and lock it to the antenna connected to the MMCX.

ok - I am new to this. i did play with boards as a kid, but never somthing so small 1) how to you work with such small things - all i have is reguler solder iron. 2) what does "you'll need some decoupling capacitors also for C113 and C114" mean?
