This would be best for the rework Weller Station In a pinch two WPCPT with fine tips will do. You'll also need some solder paste and the extra capactors. You can try taking them off the other existing internal antenna otherwise you can order them from Digi-key. I have no idea what uF you would need though.

You might find having one of these comes in handy for lifting those difficult little resistors and caps. http://www.smt-source.com/NEW_Equuip...M_850_BGA.html

I've actually been looking here for stuff to do smt and other mobo soldering stuff. I've still got good eyes and can do some of this stuff unaided, but some day when I get as old as Thorn, I'm gonna need them!

What good is PTH if we're doing SMD?

ok - I am new to this game, I did not go to school for this so bear with me if I ask some stupid questions.

I understand the first have, to flip (the resister or what ever it is) so the wire goes the other way.

1) what is "decoupling capacitors"
2) can I run a test before I get to soldering - like taking a wire (or a resister please tell me if I need to and what size strength) and connect that silver wire and see if it works?
3) can I technically just solder onto the board a pigtail? like where it says ANT2 or ANT1? where would I put the return/ ground?

thanks for all your help

I can't see or understand your card circuitry well enough to make an educated guess as to what needs to be done. From the looks of it I see a DS and what appears to be 3 (ext jack and 2 antennas) all sharing the same traces.

1) As for the caps see photo.

3) You can if you disconnect the on board antenna. Can't have both in circuit at same time or it will change the impedance of the circuit.

The DS info is from another manufacturer, I can't be certain yours is the same, but more than likely it is.
Cantenna + DWL-120 = unity gain?

Other thing I find puzzling about your card is why the manufacturer would put a $.30 connector on it and not at least a few of the $0.005 parts.

Motorola WU830g USB wifi extend range

I think you are getting beakmyn's terms wrong. When he said "flip" What he meant to say was move.... Move C109 to C209 because it looks like there is no connection in the circuit without C209 being in place but you can be out of luck as of the values of the decoupling capicitors since you need manufacturer specs to know the exact values.... As of the tools you will need i suggest the METCAL PS800 which is a high quality smt soldering station...The best price i have seen so far for the METCAL PS800 is 180$ at HMC Electronics.

Here's one for less than $3. You can kick it up a notch for another $3-4 and add a light dimmer to control the temperature.

Beakmyn was correct with flipping or clocking the cap 180 degrees.
