My latest "gotta have it" geek toy

Yep, that's what I said when I saw this Jack PC advertised. I'm thinking this would be nice for home automation and security systems. I'm sure you can all come up with LOTS of good ideas for this.

Er...

The UK company Jade Integration is about to release a PC that is small enough to fit inside a standard wall power socket. Not only that, it can be powered solely over ethernet.
...so, the idea is to put a PC in a power socket, but power it using PoE rather than...from the socket where it's in? Duh!

Nice toy though, I'll prolly end up with one

Cheers,

Mother

Yea, I read that too. Actually they were designed to be installed in network outlets.. We looked into getting them here at the district. We decided we can just repurpose older machines for free. They take up more space, but we got a lot of old shit to use.

Well if you had a LCD monitor and hung it on the wall over the jack and the monitor had a touch screen I could see it might be useful as a "network appliance".

I was actually thinking of a cheap way to do it. I was thinking of just getting a cheap LCD 4 line panel and a keypad, hook that up and you could get info on how hot the house is, etc etc.

But seeing as the toy retails around what, $250? It'd still be pretty expensive

Warspying

http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/dd9000.html A bit pricey and it has it's limitations:

No recharging capability (though you could use rechargable AA)
No Video output just the tiny 2.5" screen
