Thumbs up Neat Hardware

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2041239012

It seems pretty small, already has a wireless card (Although I think it's Frequency Hopping), and looks like it's expandable and pretty standard. Mentions 'loop' linux. I wonder if any of the linux stumbling type stuff would work on it?

Either way, it's neat. And hey, it's even got a backlit keyboard, perfect for those dark nights in the car

Hmmm... "802.11 FH", doesn't sound like it would be compatible with 802.11b... I wonder if you can take out the FH card and put in another that would be more WiFi friendly?

Looks like I would have to cut my ORiNOCO card in half to get it to fit in there.

I wouldn't see myself using this with DOS, perhaps a flavor of linux would be more like it.

... more research required... I have learned my lessons in the past by buying something because it looked neat.. like the old days when everyone was building mini mp3 players out of small computer.. anyway I went and bought a Point of Sale (POS) unit that was super tiny.. it had a backplane, with an extra ISA slot, memory slots, you name it, and there were docs on how to mod it, etc.. in the end it was using a 386 WITHOUT the mathco.. that was a waste of 100 bux.. though it is pretty cute to show for running DOS or linux.. but not for what I wanted to use it for... I emailed the guy and he said he never actually got his to work either. *slap*the POS was really a PoS!

Of course, if I would have read it right the first time:

"Symbol Spectrum 24 802.11 FH wireless card, BUILT IN (But removable! It's in an internal PCMCIA slot! See pictures.) "

I guess you can put away the hack saw

Mmmm.... I don't know, it might be neat.

I had something like that in the office for evaluation. While conceptually it was pretty cool, it wasn't all that durable... after two weeks, it was nothing more than an glorified etch-a-sketch with a keyboard...

i think the FH stuff might still be compatible...the slower modes of 802.11b are just the old 802.11 FH, i believe....someone correct me if i am wrong. but an ORinoco w/o antenna would fit in there...you know, the one that is like the apple airport client card w/ 2 jacks.

lincomatic,
No, the FH is "Freqency Hopping" which is limited to about 2mbs while the current 11mbs stuff (aka WiFi) is all DS or "Direct Sequence." The signals are not compatible. It would seem your confusing the FH with older DS that where limited to 2mbs (like the Teletronics WD2400 series.) Those will work, but are slower, uh, 2mbs.

This FH card would work with (and was probably designed for) a system such as the BreezeCom units. Those are FH.

As far as the replacing the card, with the short ORiNOCO it should work. Probably the biggest problem would be getting the correct antenna plug on that internal pigtail.
