need ap help!

need info on access points!
I was always under the impression that if I wanted to extend the range of my wireless router, that I could simply add an access point some place else and have the signal just "get there" and relay to the computer with a higher signal. Is it actually true that instead I would need a physical "wire" connection from the wireless router to the access point to make the access point become active? I talked with linksys and they said i do!

However, I was hearing before that the Orinoco ap-200 can somehow do this wirelessly? help!

Linksys is half-right. It depends on the AP. What you want is one that will function as a "repeater." Look on the specs. I belive the ORiNOCO AP-200 will do this. Some of the Linksys units will definately do this, as well as some of the DLink units. (Yes I said Linksys.) A caveat: Usually, most units will only function as a repeater for units of the same brand.

And you should never, ever, call Linksys tech support. They can't find their a... Ahem. Let us just be kind and say that they don't know their own products very well.

setup(all linksys)

router/AP->AP->AP with clents connecting to all 3

Not with clients connecting to all three.

Thorn, would openAP work in this situation?

The FAQ says it performs as a "Simultaneous Bridge + Access Point + Repeater"

It might, but he said "all linksys". As far as I know it's impossible with out of the box Linksys units.

Of course, you might also burn a custom application for a WRT54G...

Oh yeah, I didn't mean in his exact situation - but, if he wanted to spend some money. And yeah, you can do anything with a WRT54G. A mate tried to sell me his ages ago, when they first came out, and I didn't go for it. I didn't know all these things would spring up. D'oh!

And yes, wrzwaldo, it does look sweet. I've now bought a compatible access point and am waiting to find a suitable card. Ome went on ebay for £10 the other day. I went and missed the damn things. 4 went unsold but the seller wont return my emails
