Question Need to boost signal on Linksys BEFW11S4

I currently have a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router. It is sitting way in the back of my apartment. I need to boost the signal on it. Can I just add a larger antenna on it? Any ideas? Where do I buy it?

I also need an antenna for my Orinoco Gold card. Any suggestions on where to buy one? Like to start stumbling some new areas.

I need both of these asap.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings WiFiCasper,

There are quite a few threads on antenna modification.
You did not state which version of the BEFW11S4, it is said that version 2 is a little more sensitive and powerful yet lacks the SNMP support... (thanks TIntruder for the info)

You will need an antenna and a pigtail for your ORiNOCO Gold Card. Search here:

It is printed as the model number on the box(lower left hand in black in a white box, I haven't opened mine yet to play with it, else I would tell you more detail info.. The first version (version one, or versionless) would probably not say anything special... also the version 2 currently does not have a firmware upgrade, and will not allow the latest firmware for the versionless router to update the version 2 router.

Also since this is link has the latest logos, this would probably be the latest model... not too sure if it appears physicall different than the first version. (the old (versionless, version1) box does not have these logos, only the latest version 2 does)

You just can't put "a larger antenna" on it. Well, you can, but not if you expect to actually get anywhere. Antennae need to be in the same frequency range as the transmitter/receiver. That you need is a "higher gain" antenna. But doesn't the BEFW1141 has antenna diversity (dual antennae) on it? Make sure you turn off. You will also need some Reverse Polarity TNC connectors and some low loss RF cable.

But before you get all that, have you tried relocating the unit and/or the orientation of the antennae? Even moving it a foot to one side or the other may make a big difference, and save you a lot of unneeded effort.

Cheers
