Need a good card for desk stumbling
Hi, I'm a netstumbler wanna-be. I recently picked up a couple of surplus parabolic antennas at the boeing surplus store that I was planning to convert to operate at 2.4 GHz. Anyways I wanted to use netstumbler to see what I could find in and around my apartment complex. Problem is, I don't have a laptop. Only my old win2K desktop. Are there any PCI or USB adapters that will work with netstumbler?? Any advice would be appreciated,
Thanks Andy |

Any of the Apple, Lucent/Orinoco/Agere units will work.
There are several USB variants. The PCI cards are basically caddys that a PCMCIA card is inserted into. Same card by the way. Enterasys and Orinoco/Agere also have (hard to find much info) a unit that is defined as a wireless to ethernet converter/extender. Basically, it allows you to use an ethernet cable plugged into your NIC to extend to a remote Wireless card+converter box. Technically, I guess this is sort of a "bridge". |

rather than getting a PCI card caddy for the PCMCIA card it might be cheaper and more useful to go with a pcmcia card reader that fits in a drive bay. USB's cool too, i have one of those that i carry around with my laptop for network redundancy in poor signal areas, that way i don't have to prop my laptop sideways in the window of a cafe across the street from the AP or something. =)
