Question Need help

What antenna would you recommend for an Orinoco GOLD card?

I am also looking for a link to a site that sells the antenna and a pigtail for it (I dont want to build my own).

I have looked at these forums for the answer but there are too many antennas that you guys talk about (most homebuilt). So back to my question, for the card that I have which antenna would you recommend around $100?

thanks

What kind of antenna are you looking for?

An omni magmount?

A directional yagi?

A big freakin dish?

What type of antenna you need depends on what you plan to do with it.

www.fab-corp.com

The 5dbi mag-mount works just fine for stumbling and they have the pigtails as well. I believe they still give a discount for Netstumbler users, just mention NS during the checkout process.

Question

Thanks everyone for the quick response.

What does everyone think of this?

http://shop.netstumbler.com/customer...p?productid=61

Since I am going to be paying around $100 for an antenna I want to get a really good one.

Is this antenna that good? or would you guys recommend a different one?

thanks

(to Mr.White: I am looking for an omni directional)

Yup that will work great.

There is a cheaper version @ Fab-corp though.

EDIT: DUH, it's cheaper because it doesn't come with a pigtail. Throw one in and the price is the same. My bad.

In the description (http://shop.netstumbler.com/customer...p?productid=61 )

it says:

Quote:
It contains a 5 dBi magnetic mount antenna
does this mean this product gives you a 5dBi gain?

The reason why I ask is because this other antenna I came along with says the following in the description:

Quote:
19 dBi gain
http://store.ydi.com/customer/product.php?productid=68

and its $40 cheaper then the antenna above.

which antenna is better?

which would you recommend?

thanks

That looks to be a pretty good deal!

I don't want to hijack the thead but what do you guys think of this?

I would like to fire a signal to a relative's house from mine. I have a 1 story house, her's is on story as well. Her house is appox. 1/8 of a mile away and is an almost direct line of sight shot. The problem is there is one house in the way. I can put an antenna up on my roof but it still won't clear the one house in the way.

Would one of these antennas on each end yield enough system gain to punch through that house? I tend to doubt it. I've stumbled the signal from my place just running an antenna from my AP pointed in her direction. The cantenna was on a telescope tripod in the living room with one wall separating it from the outside. The signal was very good but that damn house blocked it as I went behind it in the alley.

Short of an RF amp I suppose I'm screwed but I thought I would throw it out for opinions anyway

Yes.

...
For general stumbling, the 5dB omni. The panel is a directional, hence the high gain.

Yeah, you're screwed.

Can't you use masts and at each end? Using masts to get above the house in the way, and with two low (8-12 dBi) gain directionals, it would work fine.

It would certainly be cheaper than amps. (Less than $300 for two low-gain directionals and two masts vs. $600 for two amps.) Amps should always be a last resort, anyway.

Well I am probably going to go ahead and pay $90 (since I dont want to build one) and go ahead with this antenna:

http://shop.netstumbler.com/custome...hp?productid=61

But right before I buy it, does anyone have any last minute comments or suggestions?

Anyone have this product? (if so, how is it?)

Whats the next level up from this antenna, as in paying more money for a better omni-directional device, maybe $150-$200?

any direct links to another product one level higher then this one?

thanks,
