Need help with broadcom integrated card, Please!!

Hey,

Just bought myself a new Presario laptop and I need some help. There is a built in broadcom card that for some reason won't play ball.

I can connect to my wireless router, I am assigned an ip, gateway, subnet etc. yet I cannot access the internet, lan or even ping the router.

There are no firewalls, all the drivers are up to date and I have tried reseting the router to default without encryption. I can connect to the router by ethernet with no problems at all.

Another strange thing that I have noticed is that for some reason the card will only pick up the router when it is on channel 1. I thought maybe this was the utility that came with the card but it's the same when I use netstumbler too.

After 2 days of fighting with HP support I am ready for giving up, I am going to get another card soon but at the moment I need to use this and it just won't work.

Any suggestions??

Thanks

So you're saying if you move the Router to another channel NS doesn't register it either? That would lead me to believe it's an issue with your Router. Take your notebook to an internet Cafe and see if you can connect to one there. If you can, then your notebook is probably fine. What kind of AP do you have? Hopefully not one of the cheap pieces of junk that a certain ISP (coughverizoncough) is sending out for free when you sign up for DSL service.

Hey,

I am using an adaptec ultra wireless something or other. I have had it a couple of years now. I thought it might be the router but then how come the other computers can connect to it?

I thought it might be the card in the laptop so I suppose the only way of actually checking that is to either get myself another card or go and find another AP.

How come every time you buy a new toy there is always something to annoy you!!

Adaptec makes wireless stuff? You might wanna recheck that brand. I've looked at Adaptec's site and I don't see any Wireless stuff. They're mostly a SCSI manufacturer.

Do what I suggested previously, try your card at another location, like a Cafe. It really sounds to me like your AP is having issues.

Various possible things that might deny your card connecting to the AP:
A) Security measures such as MAC filters, limited DHCP IP Address allocation scope, etc.
B) Corrupted driver installation on system.
C) Bad hardware.
D) Fault 40 (The fault is located 40 cm's above the keyboard)

Pick one or more of the above as applicable..

We used to say the problem existed somewhere between the keyboard and the chair.

I wish the error was with me then I could get someone else to fix it. I managed to get it to work last night for about 30 mins, set the router to channel 1 and set the rate at 11mbps, then it stopped working and the only way I can get it to even see the router now is by doing a hard reset on the router.

I thought maybe the drivers I have been given from HP are confusing what speed to transmit to the router and this is why it will get the settings from the dhcp but will not allow me to send data.

I will go and test the card somewhere else as you said.

I don't think it can be anymore clear, it's your router. Buy a new one.

just to let you all know, and any another poor sap who has the misfortune of dealing with HP. It's the wireless card drivers, not the router!!!

I went to the properties of the card, and changed the rate from automatic to 5.5, it worked fine. In fact it works on everything other than 11.

This is the case with 2 other AP's that I tested it on too.

I will be purchasing a decent card in a few weeks when I recover from the Christmas spending.

Thanks for all the help.....
