Need a REAL hub
I am trying to sniff my own LAN but need to place a HUB in between router and modem. I would think they would be cheap but how do you know its a hub not a switch?
My linksys (old one) says its a hub EZHUB04 but commview says they are usually switches. My other question is how to hook up something like this and do I need cross over cable? Thanks |

These are beginning networking question, and have nothing to do with wireless networking. Search on "Networking 101" or look at someplace like practiallynetworked.com.

Well
I read on this forum for over an hour searching for my answer. For some reason I figured people here would know what I am trying to do and not to tell me thats 101 stuff. If you don't know the answer than just don't reply.
I am just trying to protect my network from hackers and figured most of the people here want to do the same. |

Look on Ebay for a 10 or 100mb hub.
You can tell the difference cause hubs can't change their speed (usually) switches can. Hubs are also alot cheaper then Switches. So look for something that say on 10 or 100mb but not 10/100 Of course you can always use a Cisco Switch and turn on the SPAN port monitoring.

Thanks
Madhadder, that will help in my search. If I could plunk out 300 for commview wifi this would not be a problem but I am using the hard wire version which can't see all on a switched LAN.
As for where to post, I tried to figure that out, really i did. Looked all over this site trying to get it right because I know how pissed people get when things are in the wrong place. Thanks all |

Just FYI, if you are connecting a two switches or hubs together, you need to use a cross-over cable unless you are using an uplink link port. This makes a straight cable a cross-over for you.

OK here's some more Info. Use a hub, like you mentioned above Install a remote packet capture prog. on all your PC's and capture all the traffice that way. The most popular is Fluke Network Inspector. but there are a few others.

I have used net stumbler for a long time, even bought a gps and nic to do it better. Hackers, well sorry about that. Guess I should have said solicitors but hackers was easier to type out. By the way if you were to ask a question in my forum I am about 90% sure you would get a nice reply. Thanks all for the help. |

And you need a hub to? Have you tried AirSnare? Do you really understand what you are trying to do? Your forum being? And only 90% sure? Last edited by wrzwaldo : 02-25-2004 at 10:04 PM. |

Well, if you are wanting to sniff the Wireless traffic, then use
a wireless sniffer like AiroPeek or NAI sniffer Pro. All Avail. at your friendly neighborhood P2P network. Of course you will need a supported Wifi Card... (Cisco or Lucent) are the better 2.

Not airsnare only commview wired. It has caught some wireless access but I think its only by accident, maybe they turned off modem and pc went out looking for another connection.
Still I want to see what people are doing in my lan, wireless or otherwise. I just thought a hub would be cheap but maybe not easy to find so I asked here. |

Commview says I have to have: modem > hub > router/switch to see all segments on my side. If there is a cheaper wifi sniffer than CV than I would go that route but really I am only interested in my space. |
