... today announced the launch of the NETGEAR Dual Band 802.11a/b/g Wireless PC Card (WAG511)
Quote:
In addition to supporting the draft 802.11g WLAN specification, the WAG511 also supports 802.11a and 802.11b wireless networking standards providing maximum data rates of 54Mbps and 11Mbps respectively, (with 108Mbps in 802.11a "Turbo" mode). With up to 152 bit-WEP encryption it offers the highest-level, industry standard security.
Quote:
Based on Atheros' (AR5001X) WLAN chipset technology, the Dual Band PC Card automatically roams between 802.11a, 802.11g, and 802.11b networks, while providing an option to only enable roaming in either 802.11a or 802.11b/g networks. The 32-bit WAG511 CardBus adapter supports Ad hoc and infrastructure modes and includes an intuitive installation assistant that enhances ease of set up and use.
Quote:
Backed by a three-year warranty and 24/7 technical support, the NETGEAR WAG511 Dual Band 802.11a/b/g PC Card ($157 list price) will be available beginning March 2003 via resellers, retailers, catalogues, and e-commerce sites.
Thoughts, comments? - Do we know of any other companies who will be releasing a tri-band card?

Well just as important of a question is does it work with Netsumbler, and mini-stumbler? Also I can't remember, but does netstumbler find and log 802.11a, or g networks, and mark them accordingly?

Ok I'm confused. Is it a dual band or a tri-band?

PS I know it's a triband just trying to be funny seeing how the subject says it's the first a/b/g dual band

Got the answer to that one for you. It's dual band b/c there are only 2 bands that the card actually covers. It covers the 5 gighertz that 802.11a uses, and it also covers the 2.4 gigahertz band that both 802.11b, and 802.11g use. Hence only dual band (5 gigahertz, and 2.4 gigahertz).

But the card still covers 3 wireless protocalls 802.11 a/b/g. Read up a review about it at this link:

The subject is correct. Dual Band: 2.4 and 5GHz. Three protocols: a, b, & g.

There is a big difference between a band and a protocol. There's other stuff in the bands that don't even use these protocols.

BTW, it still draft g.

netgear wag511

I just acquired the wag511 and I am about to install netstumbler. I'll keep you abreast of what happens, or doesn't happen. I have yet to have acquainted myself with the WAG511 or netstumbler so I won't have a response until next week. If you get any other responses to your post, please keep me apprised.

Very cool! and cheap too..

eCost has them on sale for $79.99 + free ground shipping.

I'm holding off until I find something with an external antenna connector.
