networking wireless w/wavepoint
I have a wireless isp that has my main computer online. They have an orinoco card inside computer hooked into a pci slot, the card is hooked to a outside antenna via cable. No other equipment is used. I also purchased a wavepointII with 2 cardslots that I was hopeing to use to network another labtop. So far, no luck. I was hopeing to use the card slots as repeaters, useing my isp card on one side and one of my own cards in the other slot. Any suggestions. My isp says it would be a month before he could come out. Think I was politely blowed off there, so any help is appreciated.

First of all, it's "Laptop," as in "On TOP of your LAP"
![]() After I heard my friends calling it labtop, I searched eBay and you'd never believe how many people on eBay do it! The access point you bought looks kinda old and I doubt it's WiFi compatable (Before WiFi certification, manufacturers purposely limited compatability to their own products). It may not even be 11mbit 802.11b. The user manual I dug up didn't give me any specs WaveLAN = Orinoco so if the other cards you bought are OrinocoAnyway, you have a couple options: Buy a cheap access point and a wired network card, network it to your PC with wires and share the connection with the laptop's wireless card. Your ISP probably will not like this because unless you configure it differently your neighbors will simply ride off of your connection for free ![]() Buy a second USB or PCI card for your PC and share the Internet connection in AdHoc mode (Card-to-card connection) with the laptop's wireless card. This is cheaper. Have you thought about simply asking your ISP to allow a second card on your account? The second card may not have an external antenna, but if you are close enough it should work. Does your laptop need to be wireless? You can network the laptop easily without all the trouble. Just connect two wired network cards and run Internet Connection Sharing software (Included with Windows). I think the best option is the AdHoc one. Just buy two cards, which you'd have to do anyway, and it should work and your ISP will never know it. Last edited by CZroe : 03-02-2003 at 11:24 PM. |

If they're a wireless ISP, and they're using orinoco equipment, they might be using a special protocol called Karlnet. This means that you have to have special client software loaded on your computer to access their network.
I don't know for sure that this is what they're doing, but it's a possibility. The best way to deal with this is to use ICS on computer that's hooked up to the wireless ISP. |

Thanks for the good info. I am leaning towards buying a usb and hooking the laPtop up via adhoc mode. That would be cheaper. My isp is easy to log onto. I have done it with other nics when driveing around useing the laptop. There omniport is about 4-5 miles away. I can drive over and log on just useing my stuff. I have noticed some karlnet popping up when I used the wavepoint software to scan. Silly me thought that was something karl was doing since that is his name-lol. Maybe they are makeing it more secure. Anyway, thank you for the info, wished I would of asked questions before I bought the wavepoint. Would of been money ahead.

The wavepoint II should work just fine. Just upgrade the firmware to the newest stuff and away you go.It's just a access point and not a router, but will work fine for what you want to do.Make sure you cards have new firmware on them as well.
