Newbie here needs some help..lol

Ok here is what I want to accomplish. Free wifi is available in my area, so I put up a 2.4 ghz antenna in a tree about 40' up to receive signal (cannot get it without an outdoor antenna) I then ran LMR400 coax to my front room. The desktop is in the basement and the coax wont reach.

What I want to accomplish is to NOT have to run additional coax to the basement computer room, but rather, install a wireless router in the front room, connect the antenna coax to the router using the proper connector, then run Cat5 cable to the basement form the front room. or even go wireless altogether if possible.

I am not sure what equipment/settings I use to accomplish this. Do I need a router or Access point? Do I need special equipment? I am very familiar with setting up a wireless router when using it in conjunction with a modem but I have never used a router as just a receiver to "see or receive" the available signals.

Thanks for the help.

Rob

What does the owner of the network recommend the best way to connect to their network?

He said if I can receive it, I can use it. So thats why I am trying to set up an antenna system that will work. I stop in for gas and he knows who I am.

I wasn't born yetserday fellas. I know you are looking to turn me away and tell me I should just buy my own wifi blah blah blah. I read all the posts here... I have a legit question about how to set up the connection..so if you can help...great. I thought this forum was for help so thats why I registered, if all you're going to do is quiz me and try to play games with me, I'll look to other forums. Simple as that.

Perhaps this is a silly question--why does a gas station provide wifi to its customers?

You would have to ask him that question, I cannot provide you an answer if you are asking me directly. My question is about connecting the equipment to receive the connection.

I can see this going nowhere, so I'll head to another forum for help. Thanks for the replies though, its been fun. Admins you can kill/delete/dispose of my account.

Here's the problem. If he's offering the wifi to his customers, that's one thing. Even then, it's problematic because you're not on the premises. If he's just sharing with you, that's problematic as well because it is likely a terms of use/acceptable use policy violation on his part. But why am I even typing? You won't likely come back to read this...
