Newbie needs Help with RFMON Mode

Hello. I am a newbie. (nice and clear). I am trying to get my laptop to operate in RFMON mode.
I bought a new Wireless PCMA card, which is a D-Link because I was told my onboard chipset (broadcom) would not support it.

Anyhow, If anyone has the time or inclination, I would appreciate any help or information.

Does the D-link card have a model number?

XP Pro.

Do I need Linux to make this easier?
If I do require Linux, I will install it.

What software are you trying to use RFMON mode with (what driver)? You should have used instead of

Wildpackets Broadcom Wireless Driver - RFMON mode supported

I downloaded Wireshark and Netstumbler.
I am so new to this that I really dont know if either program will automatically collect Packets if the right card is present?

Netstumbler is NOT a sniffer. What do the docs for wireshark say about RFMON mode?

That's the funniest (and most honest) thing I've heard in a long time.

Probably not very relevant but Wireshark is very selective as to what it will capture through RF i.e. Through a wireless card. I tried with an Orinoco under XP and it didnt work. At least under Promiscious mode. When it was associated it worked well enough. (Just my two cents)

Read up on the difference between Promiscous mode and RF-MON mode.
Although in principle they do the same thing, there is quite a difference between Promiscous mode as used on a wired LAN, and RF-MON mode as used in a WiFi LAN.

Section 18, Q&A #4 in the Kismet documentation has about the best laymans explanation on the subject I've seen.
