Noisy Enviroment

I'm new to this... go easy.

I've just started to become interested in Wifi after buying my first laptop (I've actually had a wifi desktop for a while now, but since it's pretty stationary theres only so many things I can play with). With a degree in Network Security and my Network+ & Security+ certs, I've got the computer side of things down pretty well, it's the radio side of things I'm trying to learn more about.

So my dilema is this: While at work(I work nights with little to do), I'm trying to connect to a wireless network in a cafe nearby. Nearby is a relative term because it's 11 floors down and across the street. My wireless card is a Zcomax 325HP+ (300mW). I can see the network with a 7dBi "cheapo" antenna, but can't get connected. Also, I'm in the middle of the city. So without the benefit of LOS and a noisy enviroment, is there any suggestions on antenna styles, gain levels, amplifiers, etc. that will help?

Sorry if this has been asked before and sorry for the long post.

Yes, there's a very easy solution to this. Pick up the laptop and walk into the cafe, buy a drink and use the wireless that they provide for their customers.

Your dilemma is not that..

Your dilemma is what Erik Toivonen will say, when I inform him that he has an employee without morals working there at nights, more interested in using his laptop to commit a federal offence from within the premises of Barclays Bank Delaware in Wilmington, than taking care of what he was hired to do.

You see, accessing a wifi network without an explicit permission is a federal offence. And you don't have that permission, since you are not at the cafe where the wifi network has been setup as a service to their paying customers.

Did you read the User Agreement when you signed up? Did you read anything of the Welcome Desk when you signed up?

Didn't your momma teach you that it isn't right to steal?

Shouldn't your momma swallow from now on so as to not spawn anymore scum?

This forum does not condone illegal activity.

Kind of like what any Network Security Specialist would do. There are a bunch of LEO's, CISSP's, SSCP's, TLA's, ABCDEFG's that are members of these forums, so admitting to such an offense is not the smartest thing one could do.

Dumbass! Since you have problems with the fine print...

Not to mention that it's quite possible that if you did connect to the wireless network your machine is most likely now "dual homed" and you've just opened the door into the corporate network bypassing just about every security measure in place.
