Noisy Enviroment
I'm new to this... go easy.
 I've just started to become interested in Wifi after buying my first laptop (I've actually had a wifi desktop for a while now, but since it's pretty stationary theres only so many things I can play with). With a degree in Network Security and my Network+ & Security+ certs, I've got the computer side of things down pretty well, it's the radio side of things I'm trying to learn more about. So my dilema is this: While at work(I work nights with little to do), I'm trying to connect to a wireless network in a cafe nearby. Nearby is a relative term because it's 11 floors down and across the street. My wireless card is a Zcomax 325HP+ (300mW). I can see the network with a 7dBi "cheapo" antenna, but can't get connected. Also, I'm in the middle of the city. So without the benefit of LOS and a noisy enviroment, is there any suggestions on antenna styles, gain levels, amplifiers, etc. that will help? Sorry if this has been asked before and sorry for the long post.  |

Not to mention that it's quite possible that if you did connect to the wireless network your machine is most likely now "dual homed" and you've just opened the door into the corporate network bypassing just about every security measure in place.
