Question Noober: Access Denied

Log into Vista as admin, install latest version of Netstumbler, run it as admin, access denied...

Why?

Or better question, How do I get it to work?

There is interference from nearby network connection. Belkin n1 router / belkin n1 pci card connection is repeatedly lost.

I don't know why... I guess it is because the channel is consumed, but i changed channel and then it worked, but the neighbours stopped working, they changed again, now mine is not working...

I then changed channel again, but mine is not working anyway.

What could it be?

Other people say adjust mtbu setting down to 1400, but maybe for XP/different router.

Others say changing security protocol used to only the pre-configured modern setting: WPA2/EAS (i can't remember which one of these two is the modern one)

Others say do a factory default reboot installation of router after having upgraded the drivers (maybe this is needed for this router, i don't know, but i don't understand how the factory defaulting after installing new driver will help, or not uninstall new driver.)

This is too much for noober!

Please help me!
I am the one who has to fix this problem and the other people look at me.

Running NS on an Unsupported OS is bound to lead to undesirable results.

Vista is fairly new. The chances of getting a Application for NS style of work is low. Use Kismet on Linux

Hell, you're lucky Vista is running at all. Use a live linux cd and run kismet. Backtrack, Auditor, or Knoppix-STD are good choices.

Talking

haha!

I see i have fallen into a den of open source users!

Vista has been annoying! 2 out of 3 printers aren't working properly, because of driver issues.

There is the wireless probelm (router and pci card)

Not forgetting the loss of all audio, due to mobo issues.

What an 'upgrade'!

Sounds like par for the course, though you're doing better then most people as a lot of computers "blue screen" as soon as it's installed. Vista was meant to run on NEW hardware and works best if you buy it already installed on a machine. Getting it to working on an existing machine is not likely. There's really no reason to go to Vista, Windows 2000 does everything you need it to do

Then, maybe you shouldn't have tried to be on the bleeding edge and have stuck with an operating system that while buggy, works with most things.

You can always revert back to XP if you recently upgraded.

NS is not open source. You asked for an alternative and you were given one that you wouldn't have to change the OS you're running now.

I suggest you work on your reading and comprehension skills.

Have a good day.

Wirelessmon has a free trial and claims to work on Vista, for those in a similar situation.

...and which situation would that be? Not reading the included documentation of the software one wishes to use and installing said software on an unsupported operating system?

Ooh! I got it going!

I can see a signal from my neighbour. They have 2 access points, and their ssid is twice as big as mine, on the graph.

They are using channel 6, I am using channel 1.

Our Rates Supported are identical, and we are both OFDM24

Please help me. What should I do?

WHy is their signal better than mine? What should I do to fix my connection?

Because you're using an unsupported os with probably an unsupported wireless card.

Why does the word "askance" come to mind?
