Just got done setting up my FreeBSD system routing between my different subnets with a wireless PCI card set in AP mode. Now for the next step of the whole project. I've got about five different friends that all live in my neighborhood and have good LOS to my house. So what I plan on doing is putting a omni-directional antenna on my roof and pointing a bunch of directional at it. I was thinking of an antenna with a gain of 15dBi to 18dBi. Basically I just want to blast this signal as far as I can. However, I've heard when you get into omni's with that kind of gain, the vertical radiation pattern on the things aren't all that great. So here is my main question. If I go with an antenna like that am I going to have a problem picking up a signal from within my house using the same antenna mounted on the rooftop?

15dBi to 18dBi is overkill for a neighborhood, unless it's a huge neighborhood. Plus the pattern is typically rather flat on those; only 5º-10º thick.
Depending on the size of the neighborhood and the directionals on the other people's houses, you can do a lot less. One rig I setup had a 4dBi omni on low-power AP. The furtherest client was about 1.25 miles away, using a 15dBi directional. That worked fine. Do the math, figure out what is needed, and then build the system.

Ya, I agree that 15-18dBi is overkill. However, I want to build this setup so I can expand on it later. Say for instance, that I wanted to have someone connect to this setup possibly 5 miles away with LOS. I guess what I am really asking is what is the highest gain antenna I can put up on my roof that will give me the longest range but at the same time give me the vertical radiation pattern to cover my house, right beneith the antenna? Or am I wrong in that, it shouldn't be a problem covering a 4 bedroom house with a 15-18dBi antenna as well?

You may get something, although it probably won't be ideal. Truth be told though, you'd be much better to have a local AP for the house, and a separate AP for the long-distance setup. That way your AP/antenna combination is not attempting to be all things to all people. You may place them on the same subnet, if you so desire.
