Exclamation ORiNOCO 8410-WD..CARD CONFUSION.

Hi,
does someone have an ORiNOCO Gold card that has the code 8410-WD on it and has ORiNOCO written on the black plastic antenna housing? and more importantly.. does it fully work with NS !???
I've done a few searches re 8410-WD, and i'm getting mixed feedback ( some saying it's a proxim card, with proxim written on the plastic ariel cover, but with the regular purple and gold ORiNOCO logo on the body... others say no it's definately the original Orinoco card made by Agere. )

What are the chances of anyone owning and using ( successfully without patches ) this card with NS.. posting a picture up in this thread of the said card ( not a stock photo, but the actual card front and back )

I've also seen a few other code variants lately of the ORiNOCO card. Being sold as Classic. different codes on the back of the card, but definately not the ones with the man on them, we know to avoid these ones.

I think there's a possibility of many online retailers are using STOCK Orinoco classic card images, but selling the latest one? I've seen a few adverts that just dont match up. Anyone seen similar?

Please post your cards picture here. ( mybe the moderators will be able to add the working card pictures to the list of cards pictures that exist already ( lucent avaya Wl110 etc.. )

I'd like to clear this up.

please help!

Thankyou in advance.

p.s. I just ammended the title, as it seemed to be getting overlooked.

This card (the Agere - 8410 - purple label & Orinoco on the antenna cover) most definately works with both Netstumbler & Ministumbler. The secondary firmware changes with whatever version of the driver you are using, but the most "universal" firmware revision seems to be v8.10 which works fine with Netstumbler and with Linux apps like Kismet and Airsnort. I've never seen an Orinoco Classic with Proxim branding. But I have an Agere 8410 here and it's fine....

Thanks Jules,
Can you post up a pic ( front and rear ) of your card?

and anyone else, please do the same, if it matches the description at the start of this thread, specifically saying 8410-WD, as i've seen cards advertised on the net as 8410-WD with Orinoco branding on the black ariel cover, and also ( worryingly ) seen the same code ( 8410-WD ) used to advertise cards that have Proxim written on the black ariel cover ( no, not the thin ones with the man on, but purple and gold classics ( the CLASSIC and GOLD font is different from normal, and the Proxim name is on the black ariel cover )

Thanks King_Ice_Flash

but thats not addressing this problem/confusion of cards that look identical to the propper classic gold, but are being sold as Proxim and the possibility of retailers using STOCK photo's when infact, what they are selling is different.

We'vbe ALL seen the working cards and the GOOD and BAD.. but there seems to be a new MIDDLE ground card selling... neither in the YAY or NAY category. please re-read my first post if you did'nt understand what i mean. if i have to, i'll post up some photo's from the retailers webpages in question,,, but thats not going to sort it out.. I'm looking for RECENT photo's of people's cards with 8410-WD codes on them that match the description i've given.

I've seen all the lucent, agere avaya compaq dell cards that work.. thats not what i'm asking!!
but thanks anyway.

here's the problem in a nutshell...

This is being sold as an 8410-WD, when others with the same code appear to be the cards with ORiNOCO written on the black ariel cover... see the problem? this is just one example of the confusion.. then again.. there are others using the ORiNOCO branded products in the photo's ( orinoco on the black ariel cover ) but selling them as Mfr: Proxim and/or giving them a different code ( eg NOT 8410-WD )

see how the text on the black and gold section is different also?.. then there are the cards that say ORiNOCO on the black ariel cover... but also sport that wavey-line moulding on the ariel cover just like this Proxim branded picture.. HOW CONFUSING!!!!

Maybe advertisers should include the FCC ID in all there adverts.. that would sort it !
here's another being sold as 8410-WD

and another as 8410-WD.. can you see the differences?

This last image of the card, is being sold as 8410-WD in some places and as Orinoco 012352/G 11Mbps Classic Gold Wireless PCMCIA Card in others!!

can you SEE the confusion? i've not bothered to include the images of the cards that have ornate italic text on the lower sectioon that says classic gold etc.. I hope you see the problem here.. I'm not on about buying cards off ebay etc.. i'm on about the problems that people face buying a NEW boxed card.

Jules.. do you have a larger photo of where it says 8410-WD? i cant see it on your little photo! ( sorry )
maybe all NEW purchasers of NEW ( as in brand new.. not new design ) cards.. should be advised to ask for the FCC ID BEFORE paying for the goods? this should clarify and confirm what they are actually buying.??? just a thought.. and if it's a worthy one.. maybe it should be stated in a sticky somewhere accessible to ALL site visitors.. and not just the registered users?

any thoughts anyone? or any REAR pictures of the CARDS picturd here.. and their respective packaging? I noticed some differences there too.. i.e. a female on the box of a card being sold as 8410-WD, and a MALE on the BOX/PACKAGING of a card sold as the 8410-WD..

small update for you..sort of.

Well, i've emailed a bunch of retailers yesterday asking them to please send me the FCC-ID's of the cards they are selling as ORiNOCO classic's ( particularly the one's described as above )
but no luck yet. Maybe they just cant be bothered? It's dissapointing, but I suppose it was only yesterday...

Please lets keep this thread going! if you have any of the cards listed above, please post your pic front and rear shots so we can see whats what, and tell us all what the card was sold to you as ( eg 8410-WD ) or something else.

Us Brits ( and others no doubt ) want to know the score re these (available new, but looking like the OLD classic ) cards.

We cant ALL buy second hand off ebay, there are only so many around, and as wardriving etc.. is growing in popularity here in the UK, ... Ebay supply.. and the likes, is SOON going to be outstripped by demand. Plus there ARE going to be a great many people who WANT to only purchase a NEW ( not used before ) card from a shop/retailer, due to warranty's etc..

Np point sticking our heads in the sand, this issue is'nt going to go away.

Look, this is simple. If it is a WD-8410, (the "Classic") then it's the right card. The 8410 uses the HERMES chipset.

Proxim now owns ORiNOCO. They are just putting the name on the cards now (as is their right.)

If you are making a deal to purchase a large quantity of cards, and you're still not sure, just use proper business skills negotiate a deal to make sure the cards work with software you stipulate (ie. NetStumbler.)

At this point you are just spamming these forums with your repeated, overly verbose, posts on this subject.

STOP making a MOUNTAIN out of a MOLEHILL. And STOP with CAPITALIZING every FOURTH word. It gets VERY ANNOYING.

The thread ends now.
