Orinoco 8480-WD

Hey everyone,

I've tried searching for info about this... And only succeeded in getting more confused.

I just ordered a 8480-WD from ebay, and am wondering whether or not they do have an external antenna for the b/g functionality (I realize now 802.11a cannot legally use an external antenna). It seems like some places list it as having an external antenna, but some people say it doesn't.. and to confuse me further, some people say it does have one "under the sticker"...

Is anyone able to verify for me that it does indeed have a external antenna connector under the sticker?

Much appreciated.

WD does mean it's the WarDriving edition of the card, right?

@ OP,

You ordered the card. You will know as soon as you get it. But I would not count on a connector being under the sticker, unless that word "Proxim" on the plastic cover is a sticker (and I don't think it is).

Streaker - haha I hope so.

wrzwaldo - thanks I will likely contact Proxim about it, but I don't know if they will be helpful since it would likely be considered a "mod" to get at the antenna jack, if there even is one.

After searching around I have seen posts that refer to a "internal" external antenna connector - meaning that if you take it a part a bit, there is an antenna connector... But other posts say otherwise...

If there is a connector inside I have no problem taking the card apart. OTOH if there is not, I would prefer just to put the card back up for sale and buy a different one.

As an alternative, how hard is it usually to mod a standard wireless card to have an external antenna? I am pretty handy with a soldering iron, but quite new to the world of wireless cards.

Wouldn't it have been wiser to just purchase a card that is known to have an antenna connection on it instead of attempting to mod something that probably isn't going to work once you get done anyway?

Being handy with a soldering iron isn't enough in this case.

Haha, you'd think so eh?

I did a quick google search and somehow came to the conclusion that it did in fact support a wireless antenna.... Only today when I did a little better search did I realize my error.

I wrote the seller to see if they have shipped yet, but I suspect they have.. Oh well.

If you can get the FCC ID # we can tell you with about 90% certainty.

So, in other words, you purchased something from Ebay before doing due dilligence and research, and now you weaseled out of the sale from the seller costing him final closing fees and such. I hope at least you paid those for him since you ruined his sale.

I think it's cool he got his money back. Don't think there's anything weasly about it. Frankly it's between him and the seller anyways isn't it?

And I guess if you saw a woman being assaulted in a parking lot, you would think that it is between her and her attacker. Some of us take a more active stance when it comes to moral issues.

Being an Ebay seller, most of us find it incredibly annoying when a buyer doesn't do their research and buys something and then backs out of it, since it costs us money for an auction that closes and doesn't complete.

The responsible and adult thing to do would be at the minimum pay the seller his closing costs and listing fees so that it can be relisted.
