classic gold card -sold as proxim
Hi have been reading this thread as I am hoping to start wardriving with a laptop running xp and the gold card seemed the way to go.
here in uk proxim classic gold card is sold with characteristic thicker black end and purple with gold stripe livery. by these descriptions it sounds as though it should be compatible with ns. but postings usually say that proxim is the last step in the lucent agere avaya dynasty and is not usually compatible. does this mean that the normal classic gold card with the thin end and silly man on the label is the duff one, and that the new fat ended purple /gold stripe is ok even though it is now a proxim card. thanks.... sorry for stupid question. BTW anyone here tried aprs on the ham bands its a bit like war driving using a ax25 packet system to plot hams on maps from home/mobile/satellite etc. I used to use it a few years ago but war driving looks more fun. ciao...paul

If it says Proxim anywhere on the CARD it won't work.
Lucent/Agere/Avaya - Good Proxim - Bad

This is the one I have been looking at. it seems to match the image of mad hadders good" card. I think this is a good one as it says orinoco on the antenna bit whereas the other one with the strange lookin man on it says proxim. on the antenna bit. the confusion arises from the vendors site tending to lump all the orinoco cards under the proxim section. im guessin they shift a lot of cards to regular wi-fi ers, who dont worry about wether the card is NS compliant and just wanna log on at starbucks. thanks for all your help, this bein my first post and all. will get back to lurkin among the fiorums and readin up on all the faqs. take it easy....paul

Hi EVH.. oops i just noticed.. my thread is much the same as your.. maybe we should join forces!? I've asked that people put up a photo of THEIR cards that WORK.. that specifically match the descriptions given ( IE. the new bastardized model thats floating around... looks like the propper classic with thick ariel and ORiNOCO written on the ariel cover, but sold as Proxim.. or the Classic Gold with thick ariel cover as latter, but has Proxim written on the ariel cover!.. VERY confusing... ) then their s further confusion with the new code of 0123etc../G on it.. even though it's an 802.11b card...
We'll get it figured out in the end! |

Here are the pictures of cards that are orinoco's and work. It also explains which ones don't work.
http://netstumbler.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7823 The old ones (orinoco) are the ones that work.

Hi applecart, and whiteice, yeah whiteice , the link you posted to the thread is where I looked first. confusing thing is, madhadders comparrison shots show one of the newer gold classics next to the one with the strange looking man, the picture of the new classic is the same as the proxim one. as applecart says it has all the characteristics of the original but I think there is a discreet sticker on the back. I havent bought a card yet as I dont wanna burn my money on a bad one.
all the uk ones here seem to be the classic golds which look like the old ones but are new!!! may go for a wl110 as they seem reasoably available. others I have seen in uk are d-link 650+ and enterasys or is it entrasys roamabout. I dont thiink d-link has ext. antenna socket after reading post from fellow brit. not sure on entrasys which is re badged orinoco if i read correctly so shoul have the smal socket under the thick ant. These roamabouts seem popular hard to tell if they are the same as the ones posted on the forum, plus they are most likely european models and will have a CE number/mark instead of the FCC one which is probably useful for checking. also tricky to tell from images posted on ebay. thanks for all your input guys, I feel im learning a bit more every day I read this forum. downloading lots of threads to my clie SL-10 to read at my leisure. take it easy folks....paul

SORRY King ice flash, got your handle wrong dude,
hey applecart, see youre in UK too. do a search on ebay uk WL110,orinoco) it throws up a few cards. the wl110 looks the best but I wouldnt buy it off that seller after reading his feedback, he seems like a serial bad ebayer, the other wl110 listed with the 100% feedback from 8 people had me interested untill I noticed that by an amazing coincidence he had the same carpet in the pic as the guy with the bad feedback. I have gotta get a laptop too, it will replace my 300 and 233 mhz pc,s which are due for upgrade.

Yes, enterasys is the brand and the roam about is their line of products, just another re-brand. Kind of funny you mentioned that, because I just posted a pic of that in the orinoco card pictures.
You see that a lot on ebay. People will use pictures from other people's items because they don't have a camera or are too lazy. On electronics that don't have a screen it really doesn't matter too much. You can't tell if they work anyways by looking at it. If it is scratched (and i don't mean the MAC address is scratched off), it won't affect the performance. The only thing you have to worry about is making sure that the wireless products are for that country. Some countries use different frequencies. The DI-650+'s aren't supported in NS anyway.

For all you "Euro" people, The Cards from Avaya are all over
and are just as popular as the Lucent Gold. Avaya Cards ARE the Orig. Lucent Cards as Avaya is/was a spinoff of Lucent. It maybe easier to search the Euro Ebay sites for Avaya Also. Here are a few links for ya ---------------------- Link-1 Link-2 Link-3 Link-4 Link-5

Thanks
Thanks folks , thats real cool, its quite a minefield out there regarding the cards but its a great learning experience. i download lots of threads to read later. its a lot cheaper and infinitely more interesting than the magazines out there and the specialkist knowledge is invaluable to newbies like me.
thanks again..........paul

Hmm yeah.. that's excellent if you can speak and read German fluently
But for mere mortals, who have'nt a clue ( the ad's could read FECK*D, for all I know ) it dont cut it.! Rather than harp on about the original known cards to work ( that are no longer avaiable in the shops ) I'd like to see an updated list of KNOWN to WORK ORiNOCO cards that ARE available to purchase New in the shops! ( in UK at least ) Everyone who's not in the UK seem's to miss the facy there are cards out there now that LOOK like the CLASSIC.. in most respects if not fully, but are clearly sold as Proxim, and are new ( as in not sold before, not new design to look at ) any thoughts? |
