Orinoco Gold card, setting for external antenna?

I've got the orinoco gold card, and a 8db antenna, and when i have it connected and net stumbler running, i will get some AP, but if i disable that and enable my internal dell wifi card, i pick up more AP's then with the orinoco and the antenna? Is there a setting I need to change or something?

How are you getting the signal from the antenna to the card?

Coax size/type, length, # of connectors? You probably have some high loss coax and it is killing much of the gain your antenna is providing.

its from hyperlinktech.com it was some special thing where i didn't need any adapters cause it had the right one for the orinoco, its actually 5db not 8. But i still don't understand how an external antenna is worse then my internal dell card

The antenna itself is ok (as long as you keep it dry), the coax is what really sucks on that one. It's looks like rg-174 which is terrible, and I have no idea why they use it other than maybe those mini connectors are the only ones available for it. Even crap rg-58 is light years better.

For anything more than a foot, you want lmr195 or better. Less than a foot, the rg174 should be ok if you dont add any connectors to it.
