Orinoco Gold Problem (win xp)
I'm having a very odd problem with my new Orinoco Gold Classic PC card and windows xp.
The card is unable connect to my router (linksys BEFW1154) unless I am connected to the router via ethernet or I'm online (56k modem). I've tried the software on the cd, the updated software on the website and the default xp software (using just network connections and default driver). With every combo I get the same thing - can only connect via WiFi when connected to the net or network via ethernet. I assume this is an XP networking problem, since netstumbler works fine. Any ideas? |

Sounds like TCP/IP. Start with the basics; (Networking 101.) IP address, ping, DHCP, DNS.
99% of the time these problems have nothing to do with the wireless.

The Router also acts as a DHCP server.. My Airport card and linksys card (on other comps) have no problems. I'm at a loss on what to do. I've messed with all the wireless settings on both win xp and the router... At the end of all tests, I can connect to the router while on the net or on the home network, but not otherwise..
When you say mess with the basics, what exactly do you mean? Is there a freeware app for windows xp that can connect so windows doesn't have to deal with it? Oh, I've also started to notice some errors in netstumbler recently :/ |

<spoonfeed mode> Wireless Basics: Is the SSID correct? Is a link established? MCL off? WEP off? IP Basics: Is the IP assigned via DHCP? Is it in the correct range? Is it in the correct subnet? Is the DHCP server correct? Is it handing out the right addresses/range/subnet? Will a fixed IP/subnet correct the problem? Can you ping an IP on the LAN? Can you ping an IP outside the LAN? Can you it ping a named address outside the LAN? Are the Primary and Secondary DNS servers correct? </spoonfeed mode> As to freeware apps, there's no need. Windows is just dressing for stuff that happens at a low level. Check it at the command line. If that makes no sense, or you don't understand any of the above (or know what the answers should be for your network)pick up some books on networking. Both Blackwave and myself have previously listed some good ones "Networking 101".

Thanks <g>
I've adjusted everything you spoke of 10+ times, tried all sorts of different setups and nothing works (on this system). Airport has no problems connecting (from OS9), and linksys wpc11 v3 works fine (from windows 98, also a dell laptop). I know the problem is windows xp. I tried useing the linksys card and got the exact same problem (yay Orinoco is not at fault, nor is their software). Anyway, I'm thinking I need to reset all of my network settings and start with a clean slate (I *used* to be able to use the linksys card to connect to a school network). This is a big problem, being that I bought this laptop off e-bay and didn't get a windows xp cd with it... On the bright side, I'm switching over to debian shortly anyway (an OS that you can actually *fix* without reinstalling). However, I'd still be curious to know if I could destroy all my windows xp network settings without the cd. Is there a "wizard" for this? My network settings are so messed up, I had to create a shortcut to my ppp connection and "find target" every time I log on or *all* of my connections are hidden.. Anyway, if anyone knows how I can wipe all that crap clean please let me know. ;p |
