Orinoco Rip Off???
Okay, so here’s the deal…
I bought what was labeled on Amazon as an Orinoco Classic Gold 8420-WD. Well, it came, and I had fun with Netstumbler on Windows XP for awhile. However, I wanted to try it out in Linux, and so I plugged it in. Well, Linux sees it, but it claims that I have the wrong firmware version, so it fails to load the orinoco_cs driver. Well, that’s a shame. So I do some research, and find out that the card actually looks like an 8410. I attached pictures of my card. I apologize for the quality of the shot – I took it with my cell phone. Here’s the readout on the back of the card: Orinoco Wireless Networks S/N: 04UT13360627 T/N: 41G03491 P/N: 026259/A Encryption: 128RC4 LT: 14E0210 (text in another language) 072/2002 CE 0336 PC Card 5V/116 Agere Systems PC24E-11-ET/R 025077/A Made in Taiwan What kind of card is this? And why can’t I load it in Linux? Did I just lose my money? Thanks for any and all help! Last edited by Dutch : 02-13-2006 at 03:08 PM. linuxmunky,
Before purchaseing said card perhaps you should have got the FCC #? I've not run into to many sellers not willing to provide that info. Also check out: Dork Card FCC #`s Hind sight is always 20/20...

wzrwaldo and Airstreamer: Sorry about the attachment, but the popup for attachments did say 90K, and the picture was only 70K. Perhaps that should get fixed, but my mistake for not reading the Welcome Desk, wzrwaldo. Anyhow, I do not have an FCC # anywhere on the back of the card. That's why I posted the picture, because even the top of the card is different than a regular Orinoco card. Again, I apologize, but I appreciate any help.
SORRY! ![]() Edit: I edited the picture down to 43K. Again, my mistake. Last edited by linuxmunky : 02-13-2006 at 03:58 PM. |

You should be able to use this card with both Netstumbler and in Linux.

The sticker shouldn't make too much of a difference. I've owned 4 or 5 orinoco classics, each differently branded, non of them saying "orinoco" on them. It's just a shame his picture is so shit you can't see a thing. Looks like it has the classic square antenna bulge, however.
I wonder if the user has tried to determine what firmware the orinoco_cs driver likes. I'm a novice at this, but that's what I'd try.
