orinoco usb gold: does it work w/ netstumbler???
I am about to buy another wireless pc card. The USB version of the Orinoco gold would be ideal: the entire unit could be placed outside of the car with a homemade magnetic mount. The only thing needed would be a USB 10 foot extension cable. Seems much easier and cheaper than a card / pigtail /lmr400 extension wire/ mobile antenna setup. Plus you could still open the unit up and use the gold card inside directly if you wished. Does anyone know if this USB version is supported / or will be supported by netstumbler??? Happy hunting!

orinoco usb / win98se
I made a magnetic mount for my orinoco usb wireless nic (two large magnets from a microwave oven magnetron attacthed to a small steel plate, then attatched to the pre-made holes under the rubber pads on the bottom of the usb unit) and it works great with windows 98se. I bought a long usb cable for it, and place the entire unit on the roof of my truck. the sucker held tight at 70+ mph from maine all the way back to mass on a trip I took recentley. Found plenty of access points along the way. People should consider this setup versus the cost of a pc card and pigtail/ antenna setup. It works great as long as you don't mind having a "shark fin" on your roof.
Try it out! |

Nice idea
outcast_one, that I must say sounds pretty awesome, one of the more original setups I have heard of. Any way you can post some pictures so that we can get a visual of the "shark fin"? Also was it you that put in all the points on the national map in that area?

orinoco usb mag mount
I mapped the points in southern maine and mass. I'm sure they are not all mine, there is at least one other person mapping in the Mass area. I don't have any pictures of the mount, but it is simple to make. The bottom of the usb case has two crescent shaped rubber pads. If you remove these pads, you will see 3 molded holes under each one. I used the outer 4 holes to mount a steel plate (1/8 in thick about 4 in by 8 in)using short, coarse thread phillips screws. the screws are similar in size to #10. Just find 4 screws that fit snugly into the holes, and they will make their own threads in the plastic holes. The difficult part of the mount is the magnets used. I used two circular magnets that can be found inside of every microwave oven's magnetron. they are strong, and about 4 inches in diam, 1/2 inch thick with a hole through the center. I epoxied them to the bottom of the steel plate. Then cover the bottom of the magnets with self adhesive felt to protect your paint. You could use other magnets such as a large woofer magnet etc. Be creative. Just make sure it holds tight.

NetStumbler works well with Orinoco USB Gold and WinME
Just set up a system with the Orinico USB Gold client and Windows ME. Works like a charm. Had to get the newer Orinico Windows drivers from the web to make it work at all. After that, NetStumbler worked right away.
