Orinoco vs Onboard NIC
whats with this...i can hold 11 networks with the onboard wireless nic, yet i can only hold 4 networks with my orinoco. Shouldn't I be able to get just as many?
I'm in the same spot..i dont move anything. i just switch the device in netstumbler. ----Stkshft---- Last edited by Stkshft : 05-13-2004 at 05:23 PM. |

This is probably because the built-in wireless card you have has the internal antennas in the laptop's lid.
Now, compare this to the two small metal L-shaped things used in the Orinoco's built-in antenna. Obviously, the antennas built into your laptop would be much better. Buy yourself a nice mag-mount omnidirectional antenna from Fab-corp and you'll be able to find more APs. |

In other words, "detect simultaneously with Netstumbler," correct? Either your onboard NIC is a bit stronger, or the internal antenna polarization is more conducive to detecting the APs. Have you tried adding a low gain external antenna to the Orinoco?
Edit: Damn JTX, you beat me to it. ![]() |

Are you using a POS or a real antenna? Quality pigtail? Quality connectors? There seem to be a few to many unknowns to attempt to solve your problem. |

#1 POS #2 still dont know much about how you had it connected to the card. What polarization were you using it in? Coax? Length? You could have a bad ass antenna but with shit coax you will only have marginal signal to the card. Your card could also be farked up. |
