Parabolic antennae/USB sharing (Slow for dial-up)

Hi,

I went out and purchased a wok....12". Nice, robust thing. Now, the question is - when making a parabolic antenna, does it matter if the rear plane is flat, as most woks will be? I've calculated the focus to be exactly 70mm out and about 15dB gain speculated...

And second question - USB is no problem with long runs etc, but can you share one computer's USB connection to the AP in my other house (ie. usb parabola -> AP in my other place) via ethernet? I assume so, as Windows (pretty much) has the option to do something very similar. Just wondering if anyone else has done similar?

Look up Windows ICS. That should do what you ask.

You can get away with a flat spot. The main thing is to make sure the wok is a parabola. Most of the ones I've checked aren't.

Take a length of pvc pipe and stand it up in the center of the wok. Then shine a bright light or laser pointer into the wok. You should see a concentration of light project onto the pipe. The laser pointer has the advantage of finding irregularities in the wok.

Just resize pics to smaller dimensions.

If you don't have pvc use a spent roll of paper towels or a ruler or yard stick, just something light colored to see the focus point.

That wok is a lot flatter than I thought.

Yep, but more than likely you'll get a couple of focus points or large diffused points. Use the one with the most intense spot of light. Gain will be a function of the area of the utensil producing the spot.

ok, doing the light thing, I got a focus at about 75mm out.

But seeing as that antenna will broadcast it's whole length, surely one way or another it'll be concentrated onto some part of the aerial?
