piggy for smc, also attn: Otaku42
I believe this is the same AMIT unit used by dlink. The radio card will have 2 small connectors, one in the middle, and one slightly off center (when looking at the back of the card) The one you want to connect to is in the middle (primary antenna jack). A pigtail that will work is 100M-NMMMX-12 from www.antennasystems.com It is a MMCX to N male pigtail. I use the same one for my dlink 713p access point.
Otaku42, I may have some pictures of a Comtelco 7.5 dbi round patch antenna if you are willing to post them. Unlike the range extender, this one is easy to build. I could also provide detailed measurements. |

SMC 2655W
My SMC 2655W AP has two rubber ducky antennas. If I open the case I can pull the antennas off easily. The connectors look a lot like the Orinoco, but they are different. Is this the same connector referenced above?
I want to mount the AP on top of a mast with an external antenna, so I don't get losses from a long cable. |

antenna jacks
I have not seen the model you are talking about, but it is most likley a mmcx connector, same as the Dlink 713p. Same pigtail cable should work for you. Find the primary antenna connector (usually the center one) and connect the pigtail to it. You can leave the other antenna off (disconnected) so the diversity does not "look" for it.

SMC2655W photos
I put some photos up at www.davewilson.cc/Wireless/SMC
I was surprised when I opened it up, because I was expecting to find a board with a PCMCIA card plugged into it. Instead there is a board, and on each side of it is a metal enclosure big enough to hold a PCMCIA card. It's soldered closed, and so far I have not felt like trying to pop it open. |

antenna jack
I figured you had a pcmcia card inside there, similar to other SMC/Dlink products. The pictures you have show a complete pcb radio assembly. I cannot tell what type of connector you have from this pic. It may be a mmcx, or it could be something different. Maybe even proprietary. You will have to gamble on the mmcx connector working, or cut the connector off, and solder the wire directly onto the board. Be careful.
Here is a link that shows both connectors, mmcx and Lucent. They are almost the same physical size. http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/connectors.html |

connector
... looks like a sma but it is hard to tell straight on. Does it have a collar with internal threads that spins and is about 6mm ID. If it has a socket and not a pin then it is reverse polarity. The FCC requires that the companies make it difficult to add external antennas.

SMC2655W Access Point Connector
The connector for the SMC2655W access point is a MCX connector (regular polarity). You can buy a pigtail from www.therfc.com for around $20. This access point is sweet for the $$ because you get built-in POE and can use ATMEL config util to configure all the setting necessary to run all of different configurations (bridge p2p, bridge p2multipoint, ap client, ap). You can even make a very cheap wireless repeater using 2 (1 in client mode, 1 in p2p) with a crossover cable.

Best place to get this cable
OK - I have an SMC2655W also. I may end up selling or recommending these things to a lot of people. SMC sells the cable (MCX to N-Male?) for $40. I've looked around at a bunch of custom cable sites and they are all somewhat expensive. Anyone know where to get this thing cheap? I would build my own, but I don't really understand how -- besides the coax, and the two connectors, I'm not sure how to solder it -- i.e. doesn't the braid have to be grounded somehow to a different spot than the core cable? I don't really even trust myself since I have very little soldering experience. I could probably get it working, but it would not be as reliable, solid, or functional as the alternative.

pigtails from the rf connection
Look up a couple posts to where the RF connection is mentioned. They made me up a 9" pigtail of MCX to SMC connector for $16.05
plus shipping. Looks great. I assume a MCX to N would be similar. Email them and they'll tell you. Then post it here, 'cause I want some MCX to N pigtails also.
