The plan:

A bunch of my friends and I are going on a road trip with a few cars. The plan is to wirelessly network two xbox's between the cars using two wrt54g's. I plan on upgrading the firmware for a higher signal strength. How high can I safely turn up the signal strength (I am willing to open them up and add heatsinks if need be)?

The ap's will be inside the cars with some generic antenna's off of ebay. Can I assume that it isn't really nessisary to have two external antenna's per ap? Also, what kind of range should I expect with this setup?

Thanks in advance.

WRT45Gs dont support bridging. You could theoretically have one car with the AP and one car with a wireless adapter designed for gaming like this
http://www.linksys.com/splash/wetxbox.asp
or
http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=36&prid=550
or you could get an AP that supports WDS.

Though I am curious how the doppler effect will play into this.

They do with the Sveasoft Firmware.

Before thinking of a solution to "The plan:", maybe the goals of "The plan:" should be re-considered:

A really good thread also exists on the defcon forums. I don't have a link for it.

Tuckie,

By all means, do this. You will help improve the gene pool. All we ask is that you please take a just moment to post your route here so that we can avoid being in the accident(s) you're going to cause.

Search the DC forums using "caravan" "network" and "stupid" and you get these two threads:

skroo summed it up very nicely:

There're two reasons for this: firstly (in California at least), it's illegal to have a video display in use in an area normally visible from the front seats while the vehicle is in motion. This means that technically front-seat passengers can't use laptops, and it's the driver's responsibility to enforce that.

Secondly, people are actually fucking stupid enough to tailgate the car with the access point (or the cars behind it) in an attempt to get signal. At 70mph, this is just plain stupid. Having actually seen it happen several years back on the SoCal Caravan, I speak from experience when I call it a Bad Idea.

Our roads are clogged with enough dipshits distracted by their cellphones while driving; we don't need to add idiots trying to watch a laptop at speed in order to share MP3s with the person behind them.
