Please critique my two antenna choices…

Greetings all and Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide.

am I correct in assuming the:

HyperGain® HG2409MGU
8 dBi Omni directional Antenna With Magnetic Base
http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/hg2409mgu.php

Would this be an over all greater solution for war driving then the 5dBi Magnetic Mount Omni Antenna from fabcorp.com? (anyone have any expirence with this model)

I feel that adding an 5db external antenna is kind of a waste of money due to the fact the signal boost obtained may be compromised by the cable run back to the laptop leaving me with minimal gains from the stock configuration.

If there are another mobile omni directional antenna the has a gain higher then 5db you might feel like mentioning, please do (

My current hardware:

Dell PIII Laptop
Delorome External GPS antenna
Dell Trumobile 1150 series 802.11 NIC (with external antenna port)

Anything higher than a 5dB will start to have a rather flat RF pattern. As long as you are willing to accept that, it will work. The flatter pattern will result in more missed AP for this that are close, but above or below the pattern.

The assumption that you will only obtain unity gain may be true, but don't forget that the antenna being outside the car body is a big boost in and of itself. Plus, the built-in antenna in the cards tend to be somewhat directional. The omni will pick up more in a circular pattern.
