POE (power over ethernet) and the Axis lan cams...
i'm considering wiring some Axis 2100's into the house, but was wondering if anyone had done this using poe equipment?
the axis 2100 operates at 12VAC, 800mA draw. (it seems axis.com has hinted at running their lan cams with POE, but the only link purporting to show how was broken last time i visited the site) |

sheesh!
apparently, given just 1 month, there is now a cornucopia of information about POE and axis products. looks like axis touts the use of PowerDsine "hubs" for POE setups: http://www.visualsecurity.com/html/poe.html there appear to be at least 3 distinct products as far as POE for lan cameras go: 1) single-port "midspan" or hub 2) multi-port midspans or hubs 3) an "active splitter" for bringing down power to 12Volts, as required by most lan cameras. i guess my question is "provided it is rated correctly, will any poe injector do for small ethernet devices like lan cameras?" i see one's built by some of the regular posters here, as well as pre-built models from companies like demarc... want to avoid frying one of my cameras by learning a little more about poe before i start plugging things in... |

Not much to learn....
1. Get Plans from Internet (Many Sites Avail) 2. Get Needed parts from RatShack/computer store 3. READ PLANS 4. READ THEM AGAIN 5. Put POE injector/Dejector together 6. Plug stuff in 7. Profit... (Have Fun)Following these steps you will avoid frying your camera, unless you can't follow simple plans... As far a distance goes, on the Ethernet side you are limited to 100m. Should you need to run POE this far then you will need to put voltmeter on the device end to see how much power is coming thru and adjust the input to the devices needs. I have POE feeding an AP in a remote outdoor box. the AP requires something like 14v but due to the distance I have to inject 18-20v so by the time it get to the AP it's 14v... |

well, slashdot's got it now:
http://slashdot.org/articles/03/05/1...id=137&tid=100 some comments mention the tendency to short boards when using firewire (!) also looks like some people had a rough time with POE the first time around. good read, though. |
