I know who would think of sharing a dial up internet access but me. After spending the whole day reading stuff here I got carried away with this Wi-Fi stuff and ended up buying a Orinoco gold card for my laptop today.Figured having 3 computers why not start my own network at home and seemed to me its a good investment.
But my question is it possible to share my dialup access for now through WiFi? And for my desktops can I just buy any cheapo wireless NIC and assume that netstumbler will recognize it? Or I need to look for a compatible desktop card? How about any external antenna, when should consider getting one? I have win 98 and 2 win ME computers. Thx for any help. |

Nothing wrong with sharing dial-up with multiple computers. I've been doing it for years. WIFI just makes it easier if you don't want to route wires.
You don't have to worry about netstumbler compatiblity with your desktop cards unless you plan to take your desktop on a netstumbling journey. Any 802.11b compliant card should work for your network. OF course, if you decide to use WEP, you'll need cards that support WEP (not the old orinoco bronze.. and some others dont support 128 bit WEP and some do) I wouldn't worry about an antenna unless you have lots of walls in the way. I can get anywhere in my house with my nics. Your mileage may vary. This may be a reason to be picky with what cards you buy because some cards dont accept external antennas .. and many have their own specific connectors that arent interchangeable. Since you already have an orinoco card, I'd stick with the same product line so that you can share your antena products as you expand your arsenal ![]() Good luck, and have fun ![]() |

easy as Pie...
yep... turned on internet sharing in both XP and 98 and the other pcs on the wired network surfed with ease... turned on the wifi access point on that same switch and they too were flying along the super information highway...
any idiot can do it... and many do <wink>

sounds great. One more thing I want to clarify, lets assume that I bought thecheapo wireless NIC card for my desktops and bought a good long range antenna for my laptop with orinoco gold for accessing a public access or a friendly neighbor whose willing to share, will I be able to share it with the rest of my computer?

hmmm... Well, lets see...
The one thing I forgot to mention is that I have never gotten the automatic dialup to the net part working. Under windows, I once had a network machine request the web, and then the internet sharing PC recieved the request, opened the dialer and since it was set to automatically dial when needed and had the pword and all... it connected fine... that worked once, after than it never worked again... I simply run the dialup on the main machien when i need access on the other machines and do what i need to over the network (god I cant wait for antioch wireless to get thier equipment working!) as for sharing someone else's wifi internet with your network... hmmm, I think it might work in practise. the best way is to have a spare PC/laptop bridge the wifi (connected to the neighboor) to the network card and share it over the wired network that will thus be shared over 'your' wifi AP. If this doesnt work for you, you could have 2 wifi cards... once connected to the neighboor and the other to your AP... turn on internet sharing and it 'might' work with some tweaking... the more traffic you cause on someone else's network the more likely they will see it and lock you out... they put those damn traffic light on devices for a reason...

Its a success!!! It feel so good to finally have a wireless network at my home. Sharing dial up isn't that bad. Thought it would slow down my slow dial up internet with 2 computers sharing it but it's not that bad at all. Don't have to wrestle with the wifey for using the net. Bought a Microsoft wireless usb MN510 that thing looks sleek. Looks like the old motorolla cellphone.
But when I tried the usb MN510 at my cousins computer with aol-dsl we couldn't make the 2 computer share that d@mn dsl connection. Then I read that the aol-dsl has made it hard for the subscriber to share their connection. Is there any way around that? Or I just didn't try hard to make it work. |

Abosolutely true!
My brother-in-law has AOL. I finally talked him out of using their dialup services and he got a normal ISP. He kept the AOL because he wanted to retain his email account. I showed him how much faster it was to use IE directly instead of the AOL interface. Anyway, to get to the point, he upgraded to AOL DSL. It would not work with his Apple Airport directly. I had him go out and buy a Linksys BEFW11S4 to provide wireless. I think it will still only let one user on at a time. They do have some "funky" method where additional users can connect, but only if they go through the primary account users machine as some sort of gateway. (Does that make sense?) I found this on the internet doing a search from www.aol.com for AOL DSL: Sharing the connection AOL-DSL Sharing All DSL services are easily shared with software or hardware EXCEPT AOL-DSL. AOL decided to implement a custom version of PPPoE that broadband routers do not work with. (See this article about 'bringing your own DSL service to AOL) I have never liked AOL, so my view may be slanted. My entire family uses the damn service, and no matter what I do or say, I can't convince them that it's crap. Oh well, at least I have my frightfully fast 26.6K dial-up at home! Next project, setting up a yagi to connect to Co-Workers DSL 7 miles away. (The closest DSL availability in the area.) Ah, the joy of living in the country! StumbLAN |

If you want to go really nuts with it you can use the method i pulled awhile back but with a better modem.........i took a dlink Di-704 (regular ethernet) with wan and serial it will dial your isp whever activity is seen......i coupled that with a dlink ap900+
for the wireless part a 14.4 was hooked to the router to torment passer bys but i suppose you could use any modem on this config.
