Possible Solar panel for Warbiking

http://www.portablegadgets.net/artic...-game-consoles

1800 mAh power output. The article does not say voltages etc.. but the size of this solar powerplant would make it good to mount on a rack on a bike or scooter.

Keep in mind that with solar power, unless you have a 4X8' panel, your unlikely to generate enough current to run everything. However, running a UPS and using the solar cell to trickle charge it would be an idea.

i.e. ride to work, stumble along the way. While at work, battery charges up and is ready for the drive home. Provided you can build the proper circuitry, it would certainly extend the range a UPS would give you.

If we could only get GPS data into a WRT with the kismet server running on it, then we could solar power that with ease and not have to dick around with high power laptops!

I just run with a few UPS batts. chained together.. There 12v and chaining 2 or 3 of them toget will give you 2 or 3x the Amps..

With this setup I have an adapter that connects to the last Batt. and on the other side a cig. lighter socket.. From here you can plug in those small NB transformers.. Mine lasts around 10-15 hours (Depending on load) but I also feed some bike lights, an MP3 player, cell phone charger and whatever else I need.

My orig. Warbike project used 2 huge deepcharge car batts. but after a few hours pulling those f*ckers around begins to take it's toll...

One of these days, I'll post some Warbike pic's.. It's been 2.5 years in the works..

The company I used to work for we had a GPS reciever that was self powering off a serial port. If it was not for the price of these GPS units they would be perfect since the GPS puck is about the size of an Altoid tinbox.

My stumbling rig now is a Dell CPi 266 with 128 megs ram. I have extra batteries for it and when I roll around with it in my truck on a full charge on 2 batteries (I have 3 so I can swap one out when things get critical) I have just over 7 hours time.

I will get some pictures of the rig asap and post them here.

ok... got a photo of my kit
http://spirit.freeshell.org/kit.jpg

Note the 3 batteries and the 2 empty bays. This model of the Dell you can put the CDrom, floppy or battery in either slot. You can even double up them, 2 CDroms, 2 floppies, or 2 batteries.

This model has 1 IR port, 1 serial and 1 USB (1.1 speed) plus the usual printer port. Its not a speed demon but works fine and can support 512 meg ram of pc 100. For stumbling I am quite happy.

Wasn't there somebody who had hacked a serial interface and a CF-card interface onto a WRT ?
Even if my memory is tricking me, and it was just a CF-card interface, you should then be able to get a CF based serial adapter, and attach a GPS that way.

Not a CF card, but an SD card, I wanna give that a try myself once I get around to hacking my WRT54g.

That's no memory trick, although it's a SD card and a serial port.

Great.. So it's only 50% of my memory that's gone..
But Renderman in the vicinity of a WRT with the serial port hack, an external batterypowered GPS, a teddy bear, and a solar panel, I can only say this : Be afraid, be very afraid !!!

Flex Solar panels

Frys is selling FLEXIBLE solar panels. I'm going over to SEA in the next day or so, and will stop in and get prices, specs, etc. (Along with some other goodies!)

Depending on what battery you get, most common battery is listed as 12/8 or 12 volts at 8 amp/Hour draw. You can get bigger but I would suggest getting duplicate batteries like you have in your existing UPS's so you can use them to charge up and if need be have as spares.
Course a motorcycle battery is not too big, and you can use a standard car charger.

I am actually surprised that no-one in here as not rigged up a small CC'ed engine motorcycle, like a 300-600 CC engine to save on the gas

There is a serial port hack and an SD card hack, however GPSD on the WRT is not supported or at least it's not very stable and ESR has no interest in actually getting it to work
