Problems, 2Wire Orinoco Gold 8.42 Firmware
I just purchased a 2Wire brand Orinoco Gold and was attempting to flash the firmware back to a 6.x/7.x version from the installed 8.42 so I could use the card with kismet in linux. I've so far been unable to do this.
Hex editing the .exe for the 8.10 firmware, I managed to get it to flash to that version. This version appears to not support monitor mode under linux either. Doing the exact same thing with the others, going as far as to rip out the acceptable cards block from the 8.10 exe and dropping it into the other firmware exes, has proven unsuccessful. I've tried flashing to the 8.72 firmware (not the Ageres one, couldn't find it), both before and after the "hex edit trick", neither of which worked. Everything gives me "No wireless card driver found. Make sure the right driver is installed, and the wireless card is inserted." The 6.06 firmware (the one that doesn't check for acceptable cards) gives me the "Your current card is not updateable with this utility. Please check out website for information about the latest available drivers and firmware updates." Interestingly, after I managed to flash the card to 8.10, the 6.06 exe, states the card as still being 8.42. The 8.10 installer sees it as changed, as does dmesg under linux. I know the card works. I'm connected to the internet with it right now. So I'm really at a loss. Anyone got any suggestions on what I could do? -zac |

2wire problems
I was able to successfully convert my 2wire to an orinoco gold by flashing in a CIS & PDA derived from an official Orinico Gold. The 2wire now identifies as a "Version 5.0 Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE Version 01.01", and will ask to install Orinoco drivers on a fresh machine when inserted, and will take the current (non-hacked) 8.72 firmware.
The only difference between it and the "Donor" card I sucked the CIS/PDA from is this: 2 Wire: Variant 1, Version 4.04 of Primary Functions firmware Variant 1, Version 8.72 of Station Functions firmware Orinoco: Variant 1, Version 4.00 of Primary Functions firmware Variant 1, Version 8.72 of Station Functions firmware Everything else is the same, even serial and MAC. I obviously will change the MAC if I can get the card working again, but the problem is that it WILL NOT see any signals. Nothing. It's as if somehow the channels have been shifted, or the radio itself has not been initialized. I assume this is because of the differences in the "Primary Firmware". What I need is a backup CIS and PDA from a 2 Wire card. I didn't do it correctly and now I'm stuck! The good news is that If you apply this to a Truemobile it DOES work fine! I have 2 that now are identifiying as Orinoco Golds. I will happily trade my "trick" for doing the Truemobiles for a 2wire dump! |

It's just one card, but I hate having something like this "Get me" after so much success. |

Actually i have, since its always polite to read the rules before posting and i have done a specific search of this forum, all of which hasn't led to a result concerning this specific card issue, unless i've utterly used search strings completely unrelated like ...how to bake an apple pie....
how about just helping a fella out here if you know the answer to make it quicker.., if ya don't know the answer..say so..Its what i do when i have to help people out at work. Last edited by Ogrefish : 09-04-2006 at 07:18 PM. |

Helps to follow the rules here, otherwise you're going to get a very large cylindrical object up one of the holes. The rules state to just start a new thread with your problem instead of reviving an long dead thread. I guess you missed that one. It also says to please use grammatically correct and capitalizationally correct posts.
If there wasn't already a solution in a thread this old, what made you think there would be one now? Edit: Damn, Streaker outposted me. ![]() |
