Problems with UC-232A USB cable

I'm a newbie here to this forum so please bear with me.
My Sony VIAO did not com with the serial port to connect my Garmin GPS
to it. So after some searching I found this pretty silver cord looking thing that says I can hook to my USB and to my serial cable for the GPS.
After loading the software and finding a signal for the GPS, all was fine.
The problem came when I shut down everything and disconnected the USB port and put it all away. The next time I got it out and plugged in to the USB port, it shows new hardware detected and wants to download the program again. If I don't do anything and ignore it, I don't get anything from the GPS.
If I reinstall it, it works fine.
Why do I have to run the disk everytime? When its 2AM tring to find an address in Queens, NY I don't have time to be pulling out the disk and messing around. (I like to at least look like I know what I'm doing in front of my wfe, you know 'No dear I know where we are' kinda thing.
Can anyone give me a clue as to what I need to do to change this?
I have unplugged it after installing and running the GPS and plugged it back in and it still works. If I don't unplug it and reboot, it still works.
Its only when I unplug it and reboot that I have this problem. I have gone to Aten Internationals website, but my Japanesse is a little rusty.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Should have bought the Belkin. Works like a charm for me and makes me look like an Adonis in front of the wife. Of course the regulars know that isn't true.

Probably shouldn't have bought the cheapest piece of japanese junk you could find and bought something that works.

Sounds like a problem for the manufacturer's tech support department.

Just wanted to say thanks for advice. It worked using the same USB port. My wife is a little upset with you however. All I do is pull out all my toys and plug them in just for the heck of it to make sure they still work... thanks again,Tim

Oh, forget it. That one is just too easy. It must be time to kick off the Cajun weekend.
