Question on Gain, Cable Loss in Antennas
hi, i'm totally new to antennas and such and have been reading articles on a few things but am still confused on a few points:
A 5dBi omni antenna casts a taller donut pattern and an 8dBi omni antenna casts a flatter but longer range pattern - i understand that. If you get some cable loss while using an 8dBi antenna does it also change pattern to a 5 dBi pattern? How does the dBi Gain relate to the whatever happens during cable loss? is Gain (dBi) the same thing as the dB/signal strength, or am i confusing these two things? Sincerely, Confused Antenna Fan |

It works like this: Radio_Frequency_Power - Cable_Loss + Antenna_Gain = Effective_Radiated_Power Example: 15dBm (RF) - 4dBm (Cable Loss) + 5dBi (Antenna Gain) = 16dB (ERP) Remember though, you have to put some RF into it. These are actually logrithmic multipliers. So 0dBm into a 5dBi antenna will give you 0 output, not 5.

Actually 0dbm into 5db gain antenna with no loss would output around 3mw.
0dbm = 1mw Sorry Thorn, I just had to throw in some confusion. Hehe I know you were just making a point for him but with my holiday spirit I decided to get technical. Hydro MERRY XMASS |
