A question of wireless range boost

Is there any way to get some sort of stand alone unit that will pick up the signals of the router and boost them so that one could improve the area covered?

Yes. They are called repeaters. Many manufacturers make them.

"Best" is subjective. It depends on your price range, how far you are looking to extend the coverage, and your current equipment. Many repeaters will only work with their own brand. Your best bet may be to see if one is made by the manufacturer of whatever AP you currently own, and then see if it fits your needs for price and range.

I looked at the linksys one, which is what brand my router is, but I think my best bet is to get the better antennas because the repeater supposedly slows the network down.
