Questions about War Driving with a Powerbook G4
I have the opportunity to purchase a 500MHz Powerbook G4 but I've got a few questions first.

Well, I can answer one of your questions - the AirPort card is an Orinoco Gold card, just repackaged. So in theory it should work... Don't know for sure if taking a "regular" Orinoco card and popping it in the PCMCIA slot will work though.
I'm also interested in answers to the other questions...

First off, you won't be able to run Netstumbler since it's windows only, but there is a program called macstumbler (http://www.macstumbler.com/) that does the same thing
Kismet on OSX is very unlikely. BSD support is iffy at best and I don't think OSX supports monitor mode needed my kismet Dunno about airsnort Macstumbler is probobly your best bet. Have fun. |

This site is for people interested in logging the presence of APs, not accessing them (unless authorized)... Although I'm sure many of the members do access the networks they find, it isn't really discussed here. Have you thought about installing debian/yellow dog/etc on the powerbook?

OK, well I have a Powerbook G4 with an Orinoco Card ... so all questions should be addressed to me...
OS X will not be sufficient for war driving. Macstumbler only works with airport cards ... and the only OS X drivers for orinoco are 3rd party and don't work so well. What you'll need to do is install some type of linux, and use a wardriving program called Kismet ... this is a little complicated for someone never using linux ... but feel free to post here or e-mail me: chris@gravweb.com

To add on to my last post ... only a few things said before in this forum are true ... one of those few things are that we do not condone accessing networks that you do not have permission to access. This is against the law. If you would like to learn about wardriving feel free to continue asking questions. If your interests are otherwise ... then please direct your questions to somewhere else.

There are a number of reasons for that: Yellow Dog Linux, because specifically built for macs, includes utilities for volume control buttons and such, that debian doesn't have built in. When I tried debian on my PowerBook, it failed to recognize its pcmcia slot, the slot itself, not the card. Debian is NOT the easiest operating system to use, and Yellow Dog Linux might be the easiest distribution on a mac to use. Feel free to ask any more questions.
