Recommendation for AP

Hi all I need a good recommendation for an AP. It will be for home use, so somewhat simple configuration is desired along with good security measures. Thanks for any help.

What flava you looking for..

802.11a
802.11b
802.11g
802.11a/b/g
802.11a/b
802.11b/g

Just messing with you... for home use 802.11b is fine. Don't waste your money on the hyped up 802.11g unless you are going to transfer large files between computers in your home.

Most DSL/Cable runs at 1.5mbs at most. 802.11b is 11mbs (real world 6-7mbs) so it is more than enough for surfing the web. Going to 802.11g will not increase youir internet speeds.. Don't believe the hype.

As for ap's ... you will get various opinions. I like Netgear, SMC, and Linksys for low cost entry and ease of setup.

The most important thing I can tell you is to search the manufactures website for firmware upgrades after you set the ap up. Almost every manufacturer has firmware upgrades for their ap's that are crucial for proper performance, and most consumers never utilize the newer firmware.

If cost is not an object look at the Proxim/ORiNOCO ap's. (my personal fav)

Do you still have the Linksys? or did you already return it?

We can pobably work through whatever prob you have with the linksys... most of us here including myself have ALOT of experience with WAP11's and BEFW11S4's (all 4 versions).

Actually I returned it. After 4 hours of trying to pull an IP address from behind the AP I said f it. Simply it would log onto the AP, meaning pick up a signal, but no IP would be pulled form the router. All other machines in the LAN did just fine getting IP's. SO after making sure drivers were right, ports were fine, etc etc I returned the unit. So I am in need of another. Or a all in one would be useful.
Firewall SPI
Wireless router
VPN unit.

I saw the Netgear unit, but it didnt get too good of reviews.

Lemme guess you were usingthe linksys client and the "default" profile with your ssid set in it correct? Yeah we setup linksys cards all the time at work and we have to create a new profile (with all the same settings) and then delete the default one. If we don't it will not pull an ip. Not so much an ap issue as it was a card issue.

The first rule of Linksys products;

Do not use a Linksys client if using a Linksys AP.

Proxim (past orinoco radios) are good choices, but seem to have less range than other brands that have external antennas.
I have 5 linksys AP's (2 WAP11, 3 WAP54G) and they all work fine with the latest firmware.
Cisco rocks, but expensive.
My DLINK router works just fine for what it does.
Wanna hook up a desktop without cracking the case...get a linksys WET 11, they rock.

Just some of my suggestions.
