Recommendations for Card and Range Extender...Orinoco?
So, I've been reading NetStumbler all day about which Network card, and which antenna to get for my laptop.
I'm pretty much settled on the Orinoco Gold PCMCIA card, and some kind of range extender. I'll be carrying it around in my laptop bag alot, so I was thinking that a mag mount one wouldn't be good. I'll mostly use this at work (with our apple airport) and at school in the Engineering Labs there. The AP i'll be connecting to is in a nother room...so the extender will be a must. So...the real question is...which one? I'm thinking of the Orinoco (Lucent) range extender...but I see a few different models, depending on where I look. I see a 2.5dbi one, and a 5dbi one. Can anyone shed some light on this? I probably won't be ever using this in my car. ![]() MatP3 |

lucent range extender
It is a 5dbi antenna, with a 1.5 meter cable which has a 2.5dbi loss for a total combined gain of 2.5dbi. There is only one range extender antenna. Have a look at whats inside:

Try this to eliminate coax loss: Get a USB Orinoco and use the 15 foot USB cable to extend the antenna/card to wherever you need it. If you must use a directional antenna just connect the pigtail from the antenna straight to the card.
Very low loss. ![]() |

i've been using the blade 4.5 db omni available from fabcorp with good results. it's about 6 inches long and velcros/sticky-tapes nicely to the back of my laptop. they'll even include the correct end for the lucent gold card, so there's no hassle with pigtails and whatnot.
