Review of 3 cards for Wardriving

Hope this helps people who are considering buying any of these.
The 3 cards are a Sitecom wireless network PC card 11 Mbps (WL-011v2), an Intel PRO/Wireless 2011B LAN PC Card (WPC2011BWW) and a Linksys Instant Wireless USB Network Adapter v2.6 (WUSB v2.6)

The Sitecom came 2nd for signal strength pickup, it was pretty cheap and as such it has no internal antenna connector although it might be possible to solder one straight onto the current wiggly lines of metal on the PCB. The client manager utility on the CD I got with the card did not actually work with the card in WinXP Pro (no SP)

The Intel was the worst for signal strength pickup, if you are not willing to get an antenna then don’t bother with this card. But the good news is that this card can take an antenna as it has 2 (yes TWO ) internal connectors (Hirose U-FL) which look like the ones here
The only problem is they are far from external (just beyond the black antenna part) and the card is a pain in the a$s to get apart, even then you would have to cut holes in the casing of the card to get the pigtail out if you planed on (if you can) putting the card back together. I didn’t get it new so I can’t be sure if it comes with a client/card manager but the site didn’t seem to have one

The Linksys was the best at picking up networks/signal. This is probably due to its larger antenna (about 2 inches long and sticks out form the adapter ) and the fact that as it was on a USB cable it was a lot more maneuverable. It doesn’t have any internal antenna ports/connectors but it may be possible to just take off the current antenna and replace it with one of your choice. It did come with a working (semi anyway, likes to crash) client manager which is more efficient at finding a network than the Windows WZC one and allows you to easily set up profiles for different networks.

I think that’s it,
If you found this useful please tell me.
