Seeking high-power multi-standard...

Fellow wireless folk,

I'm seeking a high-power (at least 100mW) multi-standard (a, b, and g) PCI-based wireless NIC. I've done lots of Googling, and haven't come up with much as yet. Everything I've found to date seems to be either single-standard (b or g) or low-powered.

Any help? Thanks much.

The problem is that allowed power are different for the two frequency segments, and in some cases are different amongs the different regulatory domains.
I.E. :
Code:
Protocol	Frequency Mhz Reg.Domain US	EIRP Reg.Domain EU	EIRP

802.11b/g	ISM 2400-2483.5 FCC 15.247	36dBm ptm	ETS 300 328	20 dBm
							3-for-1 ptp

802.11a UNII-I 5150–5250	FCC 15.401	23dBm TS 101 475	23 dBm
							Indoor only Indoor only

		UNII-II 5250-5350	FCC 15.401	30 dBm TS 101 475	30 dBm

		5470–5725 TS 101 475	30 dBm

		UNII-III 5750–5825	FCC 15.401	36 dBm
AFAIR Maidenhead is in the UK, so the max EIRP is 20 dBm for the b/g band, and max 30 dBm for the UNII-II and HiperLAN2 bands. But as most a cards include the UNII-I band they normally limit the power to 23 dBm.
An educated guess would be that chipset and OEM manufacturers are making it easy for themselves by limiting the power to the least common denominator (20 dBm in your case, being in the UK) for their combo cards. Saves them the hassle of implementing adaptive power algorithms.

Well, you're wrong about his location, but for the right reason. It does have to do with Maidenhead, UK even though CN87 is around Seattle, Washington as Barry noted. Google for "Maidenhead Grid System" for the details.

(Down g8t, it's not a chasity belt! )

*sigh* Must be another of them there HAM related thingimardingdongie QSL specialities..
/rant on
Why not just give a standard lat/lon coordinate, or the plain old US Postal Service Zip-code ?
/rant off

And don't use words such as "Chastity" with G8t. A) He don't know what it means, and B) He'll just think that it is the firstname of some big breasted pr0n-model from your youth..

Why? No idea. Maybe KC7GR can explain it.

It seems to be used for mainly for DX contests, something I've never had an interest in doing. Since it was invented in the early Eighties and therefore predates GPS systems and software, I'd guess that was easier to determine a rough location by grid coordinates and therefore facilitate antenna aiming, rather than obtaining the exact Lat/Long.

That leaves one question lingering in the air... Did he have any hands free, while watching the flipping pages ?

<snippety>

I was never certain of what had sparked the existence of the Maidenhead grid system myself. However, what you suggest (a tool for antenna aiming, especially since an RF beam is hardly coherent) makes perfect sense to me.

While I am indeed a hamateur, I'm not a DXer. I tend to use the Maidenhead system primarily because I like doing things a little differently from the mainstream. It's also fun to see how many (or how few, in some cases) folks 'get it' or are curious enough to look it up.

On my original topic: Thanks for the explanations. I should have made it clearer that all I want is a multi-standard PCI card that can deal with a/b/g networks, has an external antenna connector (RP-SMA), and the top legal limit (for the U.S.) of +19dB transmitter output. Most of the cards I've seen seem to be +15dB, max.

Keep the peace(es).
