Question Setting up wireless link from office to home

The objective here is to get DSL from the office in town to my house which is ~ 9 miles LOS.

I will be using two 24 dBi grid antennas and going 9 miles LOS at ~ 90' above ground level. Should I stay at 2.4Ghz or move up to the 5.xGhz band? Thinking 2.4Ghz because of cost and the fact that there is no traffic in this hightly rural area. Also I was thinking of using WRT54G Linksys radio's. The WRT54G's will be mounted within 10' of the antenna via coax in a weatherproof type box. I will have ~ 200' of cat5e going into the office and house so I will have to find a decent POE to inject a steady stream of DC voltage. The elevations have been calculated and once the antennas are mounted, LOS will be ~ 20' above the highest obsticle.

This is my thinking so far from the office to home: DSL > DSL router > PoE > cat5e up tower plugged into WRT54G > coax out of WRT54G to antenna > over to antenna at my home > coax out of antenna to WRT54G > cat5e down tower to PoE > switch/hub > computers.

I have no hardware as of yet and am just getting ideas together. I have not done much wireless so I need some help!!
Any idea's appreciated!

Thanks,
Bill

To learn about all the aspects you need to calc your link budget, goto:

http://www.solwise.co.uk/los.htm

To actually do the sums & calculate your link budget, I made a simple calculator:

Hope this info helps

Cheers

The best advice I can give you is read the chapter on bridging in Jeff Duntemann's Drive-By Wi-Fi Guide. A new version has been released, with a slightly different name> I'm yet to read that one, but, I know the first edition will sort you out.

You can buy it from amazon.

The higher the frequency, the shorter the range.

/Me enters lightbulb mode... That would mean that all the n00bish posts that end up in the bin really are from very high frequency guys, seeing that their brains appearently have ultra short range ??!??!

If you only have 20 ft. above the highest obstacle, it probably won't work. The Fresnel Zone for 2.4 GHz at nine miles is 70.3 ft. The 60% is point of that (usually the lowest you want for clearance) is 42.2 ft.

At 2.4GHz, the minimum towers will be 133 feet at either end, and 161-foot tall towers would be best.

Even if you go up to 5.8GHz, the FZ is 45.2 ft. the and the 60% point is 27.1 ft. Here, the minimum you'd need is 118-foot towers at either end, and 136-foot tall towers would be best.
