Should be an easy link, but...

... maybe not.

Setup:

2 x WAP11 v2.6 in bridge mode.

10.5 dB omni from HyperLink.

15.5 dB Patch/directional also from HyperLink.

Since the 2.6's don't have MCXs on the inside we modded the WAPs and unsoldered the inside pigtail and soldered a 19" LMR400 pigtail right to the board.

The omni is on the roof and the patch is approx 1 mile away with LOS. The omni is at a slightly higher elevation (~100') which is why I went directional for one side.

Can't get them to connect for the life of me. I even went to the roof and stood 20' away pointed right at it and tried to get them to link. Nope. Next test I might need to get further away on the roof to get into the vert beam width (8 deg)

However, before modding the patch antenna onto the second WAP11, I left the rubber ducks on and put it 50' away from my office where the omni/1st WAP11 was during testing and used it just fine so I'm pretty sure the omni is ok.

Is there a way to test and see if I have a bad patch antenna?

While in AP mode, we put the patch modded WAP 50' away and aimed it while watching NS. We had signal but no noticeable signal change even while aimed at the floor with the patch.

Could all the signal have been coming from the pigtail only??

Open to suggestions.

thanks

I'm trying to figure out why you modified your WAP11...can't you just undo the antennas and come up with an adapter??

Also, you'll want to turn off diversity on both units and force them to use the antenna port you specify. That should help.

Also, check for dead short on both the soldered lead and the patch.

Yes I probably should have gotten the N to RP-TNC pigtails and dealt with the signal loss, but on the 2.2 there's a MCX connector and I had read of a guy doing the same setup as me. He had a flaky 5.5 mbit connection, then changed to running right off the MCX inside and went to a solid 11mbit connection just by eliminating the bit of OEM pigtail inside and also eliminating another connection. I was going for minimum loss of signal.

However, Linksys went and changed the design on me so I had to improvise.

I know I need to change the antenna selection, but...

Checked for shorts, believe you me. The pigtail is looking good.

Could I have a broken element in the patch antenna? Is there a way to test? Unfortunately I don't have access to any cool radio gear/frequency analyzer/etc to really check output.

I guess I need to get another pigtail to hook up to a regular wNIC and get instant feedback because those WAP11 have zero feedback!
