SMC2336W-AG: External antenna?

I just purchased an smc2336w-ag, removed the plastic, and found this:

I've read about all I can input for now on antenna design etc. and I'm not sure if the presence of two internal antennas means that it is using diversity and that I'm wasting my time trying to figure out an external antenna solution. I have a D-Link ANT24-0700 "7dBi" high gain omni and attached to it a short piece of an extension I cut the end off of. Touching every possible combination of the bare wire to the antennas yeilds no results other than the occasional signal loss. I don't know if that's just random, if it means the cable is crap, or if it means that touching the bare wire to the antenna is plain stupid and will result in no gain anyway. Experimentation is fun, though.

I have two questions:
1. Am I wasting my time trying to get an external attached?
2. If not, how am I supposed to attach it, i.e. where do I point the heat pencil and what do I point along with it (other than solder)?

I'm not looking to be spoonfed, just asking for some direction and maybe a link or two. The only thread I found on this card was this.

Thank you for your time and any responses.

oops...
My brain must be mush - I just answered my diversity question - http://members.optusnet.com.au/abdco...cat/cat11.html
Am I to assume that means no external? I looked through the advanced driver settings and was unsurprised to see nothing about turning on/off diversity. Also, I am using the peek atheros drivers so I'm even less surprised.
